St Nicholas Church in Perast and its tall stone bell tower, beside a palm tree and village houses under a cloudy sky

October is the last month of the season in Montenegro. Herceg Novi averages 16.6°C, with highs of 21.8°C, about 190 hours of sun and 10 rainy days, and the sea still read 22°C there on 11 October 2026. It's the final month for rafting on the Tara, Kotor's museums switch to winter hours after the 15th and the mountains start to freeze at night.

    • Herceg Novi averages 16.6°C, with 21.8°C highs and 10 rainy days.
    • The sea was still 21-22°C on 11 October 2026.
    • Final month for Tara rafting and for Budva's seasonal sea border crossing.
    • Perast and Risan museums move to shorter hours from the 16th.

October works for me as a month to mix towns and mountains at an easy pace, especially in the first half. I wouldn't book a full beach week, as it rains roughly one day in three, but for Kotor, Perast and the national parks it's a rewarding month.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Birdwatching on the Solila salt pans

Tivat's tourist board marks the first weekend of October as EuroBirdwatch, the European birdwatching weekend, with the Solila salt pans as its natural setting.

Bay museums go to winter hours

Perast Museum and the Risan mosaics open from 8am to 8pm until 15 October, then switch to 10am to 4pm and close on Mondays, according to Kotor's municipal museums.

      Last call for the Tara

The National Tourism Organisation gives the Tara rafting season as April to October, at around €70 for a day and from €90 for two days per person.

National parks for a few euros

The National Tourism Organisation says the national parks are at their best from May to October. A day ticket for an adult ranges from €3 at Lovćen to €5 at Durmitor.

    What I would book

October is when Montenegro starts pulling down the shutters on summer without quite closing them. The coast still gets T-shirt days and the odd swim, but there’s more rain, cooler evenings and plenty of seasonal activities wrapping up. For a British visitor it’s a useful half-term option, as long as you treat the beach as a bonus rather than the point of the trip. I’d come with a different plan, less sunbathing and more bay, monasteries and mountains.

    Mild, with showers

Herceg Novi averages 16.6°C in October, with highs of 21.8°C and lows of 12.9°C on the 1961-1990 normals. It still sees around 4 days of 25°C or more and about 190 hours of sunshine, but it rains on 10 days and some 199 mm falls, more than in September. Bar and Ulcinj sit at 16.8°C, with a little less rain over 9 or 10 days. Tivat airport, inside the bay, averaged 16.3°C over 2013-2022, with about 22°C in the early afternoon. October 2024 ran warmer than normal, at 18.4°C in Herceg Novi and 18.7°C in Bar. If you can choose, the first fortnight is usually the safer bet. The whole series, month by month, is in Montenegro weather.

Is it still warm enough to swim?

There’s no official monthly series for sea temperature, so I won’t give you an average I can’t back up. What the Institute of Hydrometeorology does publish is a daily reading at 8am, and on 11 October 2026 it showed 22°C at Herceg Novi and 21°C at Bar and Ulcinj. With water like that and highs of 21 or 22°C, I’d swim on the sunny days of the first half of the month, without banking on it for the whole trip.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kotor before prices climb.

    What closes in October

This is the month of last days. The National Tourism Organisation gives the season for Tara rafting as April to October, Budva’s sea border crossing operates only from 1 May to 30 October, and the hotel on Mamula island runs from May to October. Around the bay, the museum in Perast and the Risan mosaics move to winter hours on 16 October, 10am to 4pm and closed on Mondays. Life on the water carries on a little longer, as boat trips on the bay run until November, and Lipa Cave near Cetinje stays open until 30 November 2026.

Cruise ships, birds and a triathlon

Kotor doesn’t empty out. Luka Kotor’s 2026 schedule had 72 cruise calls in October, with up to four ships on some days, so it’s still worth checking the port’s list before going into the old town. In Tivat, the tourist board marks the first weekend of October as EuroBirdwatch on the Solila salt pans, and on 11 October 2026 the bay hosted the Ocean Lava triathlon, according to the National Tourism Organisation. And as the FCDO points out, the forest fire season lasts until the end of October, so no barbecues outside designated spots.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kotor before prices climb.

    The north turns cold

Up in the mountains autumn is well under way. Žabljak averages 5.6°C, with lows of 1.4°C and about 11 frosty days in the month, and Kolašin 7.8°C, with 8. Cetinje collects around 293 mm in October, a figure that backs up the Spanish foreign ministry’s description of the area as one of Europe’s rainiest. On the plus side, the National Tourism Organisation puts the national parks, from Durmitor to Biogradska Gora, at their best until October, with adult day tickets of €3 to €5 according to the national parks authority. If you head north this month, pack proper warm layers and don’t leave the mountain roads for after dark.

    Between September and November

October is the hinge of the year. For more beach time, look at Montenegro weather in September; if the low season appeals, with rain as the price, carry on to Montenegro weather in November.
