Shopping in Luxembourg, where to go, when and which days to avoid

Since 19 June 2026, Luxembourg law lets shops open from 5am to 9pm Monday to Friday and from 5am to 7pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and makes them close on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. That's the legal maximum, not each shop's hours. In the capital, shopping centres on the pedestrian streets of the old town, and UK visitors can reclaim VAT on purchases of €74 or more.

  • Since 19 June 2026 shops may open 5am-9pm on weekdays and 5am-7pm at weekends and on public holidays.
  • Shops close by law on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
  • In the capital, most shops are on the pedestrian streets of the centre.
  • Non-EU residents can reclaim VAT on €74 or more spent in one shop.
  • Back in Great Britain, the allowance for other goods is £390.

I wouldn't plan a Sunday shopping trip around the legal maximum, because the law allows shops to open rather than making them. I'd time the visit for a Saturday market on Place Guillaume II and pick up the shopping map on Place d'Armes.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Money

Reclaim the VAT on bigger buys

Luxembourg customs lets visitors who live outside the EU deduct VAT on goods, as long as they spend at least €74 in one shop and get the form stamped when leaving the EU.

    what to buy in Luxembourg
  2. 02 To save money

    Markets for local produce

The Stater Maart on Place Guillaume II, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7.30am to 2pm, sells fruit, flowers, fresh cheese and homemade jam. A good place to shop without paying for a brand.

    Place Guillaume II
  3. 03 My tip

Sundays work best with a market

The LCTO says central shops open on Sundays several times a year, and the flea market on the first Sunday of the month runs alongside them. Check the city calendar first.

  4. 04 Watch out

    Three days when everything shuts

On 1 January, 1 May and 25 December shops can't open, apart from bakers, butchers, patisseries, delis and tea rooms, from 5am to 7pm.

What I would book

Luxembourg isn’t a shopping destination in the way Andorra is, but something changed in June 2026 that’s worth knowing before you go. A new trading hours law, pedestrian streets in the heart of the capital and a calendar of markets that, for me, is the best part. There’s also an angle Spanish and French visitors don’t get, because as a UK resident you can reclaim the VAT. Here’s when shops open, where they are and what I’d keep in mind.

The opening hours that changed in 2026

On 19 June 2026 the law of 19 December 2025 on shop opening came into force. According to Guichet.lu, shops may open Monday to Friday from 5am to 9pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the eve of a holiday from 5am to 7pm. Closing moves forward to 6pm on three dates, the eve of National Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and the law allows round-the-clock opening on two days a year.

Three days are off limits. New Year’s Day, May Day and Christmas Day are closed days, with an exception for bakers, butchers, pastry shops, traiteurs and tea rooms, which keep the 7pm limit. The rule doesn’t apply to hospitality, to shops inside stations or at the airport, or to motorway service stations. What it costs to fill the tank is explained in petrol prices in Luxembourg.

My warning is simple. That’s the most the law allows, not any shop’s actual hours. Visit Luxembourg still publishes the old regime, so don’t be surprised to see different times depending on where you look. Holiday dates for 2026 and 2027 are in Luxembourg public holidays.

Where to shop in the capital

The LCTO sums up Luxembourg City well. Shopping is concentrated in the pedestrian zone of the centre, with local shops and familiar brands in fashion and accessories, beauty and health, food and delicatessen, and home and leisure. For a break, the lanes of the old town and the Gare district have no shortage of cafés and restaurants. For a shopping map, the tourist office points you to a dedicated desk, the Cityshopping Info Point, on Place d’Armes.

On the edge of the city there are two big shopping centres, plus a third in the European quarter. Which they are and how to reach them is in shopping centres in Luxembourg.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Can you shop on a Sunday?

Under the new law, yes, until 7pm. Whether the shop you want is open is another matter. The LCTO explains that city-centre shops open on Sundays several times a year, alongside sales and street braderies, and the vide-grenier held on the month’s first Sunday coincides with those openings. If your trip falls on a Sunday, check the city calendar before assuming the shops will be open.

The best known of those days is the capital’s Braderie. According to the LCTO, more than a hundred shops offer discounts all day on fashion, accessories, homeware, toys, tech and beauty, while the streets fill with entertainment and food stalls. The contact the LCTO gives is Cityshopping, at number 2 on Place d’Armes. In 2026 it fell on a Monday, 7 September, so don’t assume it’s a weekend event. I haven’t seen the 2027 date published yet. If you’re travelling in early September and like a bargain, I’d check the calendar before fixing your dates.

The markets, which I wouldn’t miss

For me, the most interesting shopping in the capital happens outdoors. The Stater Maart fills Place Guillaume II on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7.30am to 2pm, with stalls of fresh cheese, homemade jam, spices, flowers, fruit and vegetables. On Thursdays the Garer Maart brings a dozen stalls of regional produce to Place de Paris, halfway down Avenue de la Liberté.

Sundays have their own calendar. The Glacismaart mixes flea market, flowers and local produce every third Sunday between March and November, with August off. Konscht am Gronn turns a bridge in the Grund into an open-air gallery with up to 34 artists on the first Sunday from May to October. And Place d’Armes hosts a brocante twice a month. In winter, the Winterlights markets take over the centre between 20 November 2026 and 3 January 2027.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

VAT back and what you can take home

Luxembourg charges VAT at a standard 17%, with lower bands for some goods. As a UK resident you normally live outside the EU, so Luxembourg customs lets you deduct VAT from goods bought during a stay of under six months, as long as you prove your residence when you buy. You’ll need to spend at least €74, tax included, in the same shop, and get the invoice, export declaration or tax-free cheque stamped by customs as you leave the EU. Food and drink, tobacco and medicines are among the exclusions.

Then there’s the other side of the Channel. Arriving in Great Britain, your allowance for other goods is £390, and it’s per person, so two travellers can’t combine theirs. What’s worth buying, crémant included, is covered in what to buy in Luxembourg.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

When is the Luxembourg Braderie?

It's a single day a year in the capital, with over a hundred city-centre shops cutting prices and a street-party feel. In 2026 it took place on Monday 7 September; the LCTO calendar will carry the 2027 date.
