July, 257.6 hours of sunshine and 18.7°C on average
Luxembourg in summer, when the country lives outdoors
In summer Luxembourg averages 16.7 to 18.7°C at Findel and gets more than 237 hours of sunshine a month, with frequent thunderstorms. It's the season for swimming lakes, National Day on 22 and 23 June, the Fête de la Musique (11 to 21 June 2027) and the Schueberfouer funfair, which in 2027 runs from 20 August to 8 September.

- In summer Findel averages from 16.7°C in June to 18.7°C in July, with plenty of thunderstorms.
- National Day is 23 June, with torches and fireworks on the eve.
- The 2027 Schueberfouer runs from 20 August to 8 September on the Champ du Glacis.
- Luxembourg's 2027 summer school holidays run from 16 July to 14 September.
If you're going in summer, I'd aim for the second half of June. You get the longest days, the Fête de la Musique and National Day, before Luxembourg's schools break up. In August I'd go for the Schueberfouer and the Moselle, knowing heat and storms can change the plan.

01 Most beautiful
The night before National Day
On the evening of 22 June the capital pours onto the streets for the torchlight parade and fireworks from the Adolphe Bridge. On the 23rd there's a parade, a Te Deum and a 21-gun salute.

02 Worth the splurge
Inside the Grand Ducal Palace, summer only
The palace opens its rooms only in summer (in 2026, from 18 July to 30 August), at €18 for adults. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced.

03 My tip
Swim only where it's allowed
The lake swimming season usually runs from May to September, and the Upper Sûre, a drinking-water reservoir, has strict rules. Remerschen caps visitors at 3,000.

Watch the heat warnings
In hot, dry spells Visit Luxembourg points to official wildfire advice and LU-Alert warnings. Findel's record high is 39.0°C (102°F).
Luxembourg weather
What I would book
Summer is when Luxembourg heads outdoors. There are concerts in the squares, a wine festival somewhere on the Moselle most weekends, swimming in the lakes and two big dates, National Day in June and the Schueberfouer at the end of August. Here’s what to expect from the weather and how I’d split those weeks.
Mild, bright and stormy
Findel’s normals give 16.7°C in June, 18.7°C in July and 18.4°C in August, roughly 62 to 66°F. For the capital, STATEC puts July’s average highs at 24.9°C and lows at 12.4°C, so evenings cool off and a light jumper earns its place in the case. It’s the sunniest stretch of the year, 257.6 hours in July, but also the stormiest. June averages 8.6 thunderstorm episodes and July 8.0, and the rain, about 72 mm a month, often arrives in downpours.
Real heat is rare but it happens. Findel’s thermometer reached 39.0°C on a 25 July, in 2019, and 37.9°C in August 2003. In hot, dry spells Visit Luxembourg asks walkers to follow the official wildfire advice, worth bearing in mind if you’re heading into the Mullerthal or the Ardennes.
June, music and National Day
June is my favourite summer month. The Fête de la Musique fills the country with free concerts between 11 and 21 June 2027. Then the 22nd brings the night before Luxembourg National Day, when the guard is changed, the Fakelzuch torchlight procession winds through the centre and fireworks are launched from the Adolphe Bridge, while the streets party until late. The 23rd itself, a bank holiday, is more formal, with the official ceremony held in the Philharmonie, soldiers on parade, a Te Deum in the cathedral and 21 guns fired from the Fetschenhof. On the eve of the national holiday shops have to shut by 18:00. The whole month is covered in Luxembourg in June.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
July, lakes, wine and the palace
With Luxembourg’s schools on holiday from 16 July 2027, it’s time for the water. The Upper Sûre lake, a 380-hectare reservoir, has lawn beaches, kayaks and a solar boat, and the Remerschen lakes on the Moselle cap entry at 3,000 people. The options are compared in swimming lakes in Luxembourg, and the rest of the month in Luxembourg in July.
On the Moselle, Ehnen holds its Éiner Wënzerdag when the third weekend of July comes round, and from then until the harvest the wine villages take turns with their festivals. In the capital, the Grand Ducal Palace opens its state rooms in summer only. In 2026 that was between 18 July and 30 August, with tickets at €18 for adults, and the 2027 dates hadn’t been published yet.
August, the Schueberfouer
On the second weekend of August Stadtbredimus holds the Picadilly, named after a sparkling wine-and-blackcurrant drink that, according to the national portal, is only served there. 15 August is a bank holiday. And on 20 August 2027 the Schueberfouer opens on the Champ du Glacis, with rides turning daily between 12:00 and 1:00 until 8 September. It’s an afternoon-into-evening affair, with rides and food stalls, and for me there’s no better place to see Luxembourgers enjoying themselves.
In summer the capital also runs its Summer in the City programme, with bandstand concerts on Place d’Armes and the Blues’n’Jazz Rallye, whose 2027 dates weren’t known when I wrote this guide. Two more are worth watching for. Kinnekswiss Loves turns the big lawn of the municipal park into an open-air concert with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, and the City Open Air Cinema, run by the city’s Cinémathèque, screens films at sunset on Place Guillaume II; in 2025 that was late July and the end of August. Up north, the Clervaux Castle Summer Festival is free to attend and the Beaufort castle grounds host open-air concerts.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
How I’d plan it
Given the choice, the second half of June. If August is all I can do, a Schueberfouer evening, a day at a lake, a day on the Moselle, and any walks early, back before the sun bites and the afternoon storms roll in. Travelling from the UK with children, the lakes with approved bathing areas and the funfair tend to go down well, and free public transport saves you hunting for parking in the capital on busy days. To see how the country changes month by month, carry on to Luxembourg in August.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Sûre on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
