The Bock rock with remains of the fortress, the River Alzette and the buildings of the Grund below the upper town

St Michael's Church (Église Saint-Michel), on rue Sigefroi in Luxembourg City, is one of the oldest places of worship in the capital. It stands on the site of a chapel Count Sigefroi had built in 987, destroyed and rebuilt many times, and its present look dates from 1688. It combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.

  • St Michael's Church, on rue Sigefroi, is one of the oldest places of worship in Luxembourg City.
  • It stands where Sigefroi had a chapel built in 987; its present look dates from 1688.
  • It blends Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque, and UNESCO calls it a museum of sacred art.
  • No visiting hours are published; it's a few steps from the Bock Casemates.

It isn't worth a detour on its own, but it sits on the way between the old town and the Bock and tells a story the cathedral doesn't. I'd pop in for five minutes on the way to or from the casemates and look at it for what it is, a survivor.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Three styles in one building

So many rounds of destruction and rebuilding have left a church where Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque sit side by side, according to the city tourist office. For me that's its real charm, reading centuries of sieges in the stonework.

  2. 02 My tip

    Ring before you go

The official websites publish no visiting hours. The city tourist office gives +352 46 20 23 as the contact; if you want to see the interior properly, I'd ask first.

  3. 03 Getting there

    Steps from the casemates

Rue Sigefroi runs down towards the Montée de Clausen, where the Bock Casemates start. It all fits into the same morning.

  4. 04 To save money

    A national museum next door

The national museum of history and art, on the old fish market, is right beside it. It costs €7, with free entry for under-26s and for everyone on Thursdays from 17:30 to 20:00.

What I would book

Some churches are worth seeing because they’re big, others because they’re old. St Michael’s belongs to the second group, and few places in Luxembourg City can say the same. It stands on rue Sigefroi, a stone’s throw from the Bock rock, and its story begins almost alongside the city’s own. Here’s what makes it special and where it slots into a stroll.

A chapel from the year 987

The city’s birth date is 963, the year Count Sigefroi took over the Bock and put up a small castle. The government’s portal points out that the charter for that exchange was actually formalised in 987, and in that same year, according to the city tourist office, Sigefroi had a small chapel built where St Michael’s now stands. So its history runs in step with the city’s from its first document, and very few stones in the capital can claim as much.

What you see today isn’t that chapel. The tourist office explains that the building was destroyed and rebuilt many times, altered and enlarged over the centuries, which is hardly surprising in a city that passed between Burgundians, Spaniards, French, Austrians and Prussians. Its present appearance is the one it was given in 1688, four years after Louis XIV captured the city. It was restored in the 1960s and again in the 1980s.

Three styles that tell of sieges

The result is a building where Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque live side by side. I think that’s its real charm. Elsewhere a mix like this might be an architect’s whim; here it’s the mark left by centuries of warfare over the most fought-over fortress in the region. UNESCO, in its World Heritage entry for the old town, describes it today as a veritable museum of sacred art.

I won’t walk you through the interior piece by piece, because the official sources don’t, and I’m not going to invent altarpieces. My advice is to step inside if the door’s open, looking at how the eras fit together, and then stepping back out to see the Bock rock right beside you.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.

When can you visit?

It’s a working church, and neither the city tourist office nor visitluxembourg publishes visiting hours or a price. The only practical detail the office gives is a contact number, +352 46 20 23. If you want to see the inside properly, I’d ring first, especially on a Sunday.

My advice is not to build your morning around it but to pass by on the way to or from the Bock Casemates, just down the street. If the door’s open, go in for five minutes; if not, the front and the setting are enough to justify the stop.

The old fish market quarter

St Michael’s sits in the oldest heart of the upper town, beside the Marché-aux-Poissons, the old fish market. That’s where you’ll find the national museum of history and art, which costs €7 and is free for under-26s. The Vauban walk passes close by too, over the old castle bridge by the Council of State and along the back of the museum’s houses.

One day a year this corner comes alive. The Éimaischen, the market of pottery and of the little bird-shaped clay whistles called Péckvillercher, takes over the Marché-aux-Poissons and the surrounding streets on a Monday in spring. In 2027 it falls on 29 March, according to the city tourist office, which that year is Easter Monday. If your trip coincides, it’s the best day to see this part of town at its liveliest.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.

Where it fits in your walk

My order would be this. Start at the Bock with the casemates, walk up rue Sigefroi past St Michael’s, duck into the national museum if it’s raining and carry on towards the cathedral and the Grand Ducal Palace. In fine weather I’d skip the museum, head back to the Bock and take the Chemin de la Corniche south with the Grund below. Either way the church is on your route, which is exactly where it works best.

On a single day in the capital, perhaps down from Brussels by train, this corner around the Bock is where I’d spend the morning, leaving the afternoon for the Grund. The church itself takes a few minutes; the view from the rock beside it deserves considerably longer.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in St Michael's Church and choose by the reviews.
