Municipality in the canton of Luxembourg, Guttland

Sandweiler, the airport municipality that kept its countryside

Sandweiler is a municipality of 3,872 people in the canton of Luxembourg, right beside the capital, with just two localities, Sandweiler and Findel. Findel is where the country's airport is, and the municipality also holds the German war cemetery, with 10,913 graves. visitguttland adds three waymarked walks past springs, old mills and wetland.

For most British visitors Sandweiler means two things, the airport and the German war cemetery. With a spare afternoon before a flight, I'd visit the cemetery and walk the Birelergronn springs trail, which puts you in open country a stone's throw from the runway.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The German war cemetery

On Rue d'Itzig lie 10,913 German soldiers who died in the winter of 1944-45. It was the first German cemetery created outside Germany, according to the LCTO.

  2. 02 Getting there

The airport is in this municipality

Findel, one of Sandweiler's two localities, gives its name to Luxembourg Airport. STATEC counted three hotels or similar establishments in the municipality in 2025.

  3. 03 My tip

    Three walks that link up

The Birelergronn springs trail (7 km) and the old mills trail from Schrassig (5 km) meet at the Neimillen wetland, so you can do them back to back. The 3.8 km DuPont nature trail starts at the station.

Plenty of travellers have passed through Sandweiler without knowing it. It has just two official localities, Sandweiler village and Findel, and the second is where the country’s airport stands. With 3,872 residents at the start of 2026 and around 7.7 km², it’s a small municipality squeezed between the capital, the motorways and the runway, yet visitguttland insists it has held on to its rural character.

The cemetery that puts Sandweiler on the map

For a visitor, the main reason to stop is the Sandweiler German war cemetery on Rue d’Itzig. It holds 10,913 German soldiers who died in the winter of 1944-45 and was the first German cemetery laid out beyond Germany’s borders. A few minutes away, just inside the capital, is the Luxembourg American Cemetery, where General Patton is buried. I’d visit them together on the same morning, because seeing both sides of the same winter one after the other says more than any museum panel.

What else is there?

Three waymarked walks recommended by visitguttland. The Birelergronn springs trail, 7 km long, has illustrated panels on the history and ecology of the area. The old mills trail starts in Schrassig, over the boundary in Schuttrange, and runs for 5 km. The two meet at the Neimillen wetland, so you can string them together. From Sandweiler station there’s also a 3.8 km nature trail named after the DuPont company, which explores the countryside around the village. All three are free and need no booking.

These aren’t spectacular hikes. They’re gentle countryside walks, the kind you appreciate after a flight or before one. Being able to step off a plane and be among springs, mills and wetland within a few kilometres is, to my mind, one of the quiet pleasures of a country this small.

The airport and where to stay

If you’re flying in, Luxembourg Airport is at Findel. Luxair publishes a route to London City, and the airport lists British Airways and easyJet among its airlines. STATEC counted three hotels or similar establishments in the municipality in 2025, up from two the year before. For the night before an early departure, that makes sense. To see the country, I’d base myself in the capital, a free bus ride away.

How I’d use Sandweiler

I’d treat it as the bookend of a trip rather than a destination in itself. On the last day, check out of your hotel in town, visit the two war cemeteries, walk the Birelergronn trail if the weather holds and head to Findel for your flight. It’s a calm, thoughtful way to finish a visit to Luxembourg, and it keeps you close to the terminal all day, so there’s no last-minute dash across the city to catch your flight.
