The towers of Differdange Castle, one with a conical roof and one square with flags, covered in ivy

Differdange, the iron town that painted its cooling towers

Differdange (Déifferdeng) is Luxembourg's third-largest commune, with 31,421 residents on 1 January 2026, and calls itself the Cité du Fer. It has a castle now used by a university, five cooling towers from the old steelworks painted in 2020, the Luxembourg Science Center and, within its boundaries, the mining village of Lasauvage.

  • Differdange is Luxembourg's third-largest commune, with 31,421 residents on 1-1-2026.
  • It calls itself the Cité du Fer after its steelworks, founded in 1896.
  • It has the Luxembourg Science Center and five cooling towers painted in 2020.
  • Lasauvage belongs to the commune, and Fond-de-Gras is next door.

Differdange isn't a weekend destination, but it makes a good half day. I'd use it as the way in to Fond-de-Gras and Lasauvage, and if it's raining or I had children with me, the Science Center alone would justify the train from the capital.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Cooling towers turned mural

The five towers of the old steelworks were painted in 2020 by the artist Alain Welter to save them from demolition. Another tower from the set, the Hadir, had already gone in 2014.

  2. 02 Worth the splurge

A science centre for the whole family

The Luxembourg Science Center has more than a hundred hands-on stations and a planetarium. Adult entry is €17, and the LuxembourgPass takes off 30%.

A station on the free line

What I would book

Differdange is one of those towns best understood through its nickname. It calls itself the Cité du Fer, the city of iron, and that’s no empty slogan. Steelworks were founded here in 1896, and this is where the Grey beams that made the town’s name came from, according to visitluxembourg. What’s interesting today is how it has chosen to live with that past.

A big town few people know

With 31,421 residents on 1 January 2026, Differdange is Luxembourg’s third-largest commune, behind only the capital and Esch-sur-Alzette. It sits in the Chiers valley at the foot of the Dogger escarpment, a ridge that rises a good hundred metres above the plain. The commune brings together four official localities, Differdange, Niederkorn, Oberkorn and the mining village of Lasauvage.

Its history goes back well before iron. visitluxembourg mentions a Cistercian abbey founded in 1235, and neighbouring Sanem records in its own history that when the troops of Henry II of France destroyed Soleuvre castle in 1552, its lady, Anna von Isenburg, moved to the castle at Differdange.

The castle and the centre

Differdange Castle is now home to Miami University, the American university, and the official listing gives no visiting hours, so I’d enjoy it from outside. The centre also has the new town hall of 1964, the old town hall now running as the Aalt Stadhaus regional arts centre, the Marcel Noppeney cultural centre with its exhibitions, and Parc Gerlache, a green lung in the middle of town with a floral clock.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Esch-sur-Alzette before prices climb.

The towers that weren’t pulled down

My favourite thing in Differdange sits just outside the centre. The five cooling towers of the old Arcelor steelworks were painted in 2020 by the street artist Alain Welter, as part of the Kunst im LOOP project. The aim was to bring the site’s industrial history into view and, above all, to spare the towers from demolition. Another tower from the set, the Hadir, had already come down in 2014. For me they’re the best industrial photograph in the south after the Belval blast furnaces.

The other mining landmark is the Mine Grôven, a gallery worked until 1957 and later opened to visitors, with audio stories, photographs and tools that answer the basic questions, what a mine is, how the miners lived and which tools they used. In September 2026 it was closed for renovation and visits were by appointment only, so check before you go.

The Luxembourg Science Center

The Luxembourg Science Center is the town’s big family draw. It has more than a hundred interactive stations in five languages, English included, plus science shows, workshops and a planetarium. The centre promises you can lift a car with one hand or play table football against a robot, which tells you the tone. Entry is €17 for adults and €10 for ages 6 to 17, and the LuxembourgPass knocks off 30%. You can get there by train on the same CFL line that serves Differdange, and several bus routes stop on rue Emile Mark.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Esch-sur-Alzette before prices climb.

Lasauvage and Fond-de-Gras

A few kilometres from the centre, Lasauvage is a mining village at the bottom of a valley, with the neo-Gothic St Barbara’s church and small museums that open on Sundays in season. The Minièresbunn mine train arrives there from Fond-de-Gras, whose postal address is Niederkorn, in this same commune. On its Differdange page, visitluxembourg highlights the Bei der Giedel café there, a miners’ bistro dating from 1881, and a rebuilt early 20th-century Differdange grocer’s shop. Between the two stretches the Prënzebierg and Giele Botter nature reserve, a former open-cast mine where plants have reclaimed the red earth.

Getting there and how long to stay

The town has its own station, with trains from the capital via Esch and Belval that carry on to Rodange, and second-class travel is free. FlixBus stops here too. For Lasauvage, bus line 6 runs from Differdange through Niederkorn. If you’re walking, the Minett Trail stage between Pétange and Differdange stations is 16.6 km, and Visit Minett rates it as difficult.

I’d give it half a day, or a full one if you add the Science Center and, on a Sunday in season, the Fond-de-Gras trains. Everything else in the south is laid out in the Minett guide.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Esch-sur-Alzette and choose by the reviews.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Differdange?

See the castle, the five painted cooling towers of the old steelworks, the Luxembourg Science Center and Parc Gerlache, then head a few kilometres out to the mining village of Lasauvage and Fond-de-Gras.

Where is Differdange?

In south-west Luxembourg, in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, in the Chiers valley close to the French border. It's one of the towns of the Minett, the old mining basin.

How do I get from Luxembourg City to Differdange?

By CFL train on the line from the capital to Rodange via Esch and Belval. Second class within Luxembourg is free. FlixBus also stops in Differdange.

Why is Differdange called the Cité du Fer?

Because of its steelmaking past. visitluxembourg describes it as a first-rank industrial centre, known for Grey beams, with steelworks founded in 1896.

Can you visit Differdange Castle?

The official listing presents it as home to Miami University and gives no visiting hours. I'd admire it from outside on the way into the centre.

Where can I stay near Differdange?

STATEC counted two hotels in the commune in 2025. With so little choice, I'd look at Esch-sur-Alzette, a few stops down the same line, which has more hotels and a youth hostel.
