  • Grevenmacher is the most town-like place on the Moselle, with 5,297 residents and the Wine Queen.
  • It's home to Bernard-Massard, the largest family producer, and a tropical butterfly garden.
  • The Kulturhuef museum is free, Tuesday to Sunday afternoons.
  • Its wine festival, on the second weekend of September, is the biggest in the country.

Grevenmacher isn't the prettiest place on the Moselle, and it doesn't need to be. It's the most complete. I'd come for Bernard-Massard and the butterfly garden, a few minutes apart, and I'd save it for a rainy day, because nearly all the good stuff is indoors.

If Remich is the Moselle’s postcard, Grevenmacher is its little capital. visitluxembourg calls it the metropolis of the Moselle and says it embodies the Miseler Way of Life, the river people’s way of living, like nowhere else. It’s a town of 5,297 residents between the water and the vines, all in a single locality, and it’s where Luxembourg’s Wine Queen lives.

A wine town, not just a village with vines

You notice the difference from the rest of the Luxembourg Moselle Valley as soon as you arrive. There’s a pedestrian centre with shops and restaurants, a pool, a regional cinema and a big playground with a sports pitch by the river. And there are cellars right in town, which is what brings me here. In the canton of Grevenmacher the soil turns to limestone and the slopes steepen, and according to the government portal that gives sharper wines than in the south.

Bernard-Massard and the other cellars

The headline visit is Bernard-Massard, at 22 route du Vin. It bills itself as the country’s biggest family-run house, now run by the fifth generation and turning out nearly 3.5 million bottles a year. The tour starts with a film and moves through the historic cellars, and you can taste with or without it in a room overlooking the river. In September 2026 it kept weekday hours of 10:00 to 18:00, with an extra hour on Saturdays and Sundays, from €8 or free with the LuxembourgPass.

The Vinsmoselle co-operative also has its Caves de Grevenmacher here, on rue des Caves. With both, and the rest of the valley, you can plan the day along the Luxembourg Moselle wine route.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Butterflies and a free museum

By the river promenade is the Päiperleksgaart, the Grevenmacher butterfly garden, a tropical glasshouse of more than 600 m² at 28 °C where thirty to forty species from around the world fly free. It opens daily until 31 October 2026, from €10 or free with the LuxembourgPass. With children, it’s a must-do stop.

The Kulturhuef is the town museum, and its website lists free entry every afternoon from 14:00 to 18:00 except Mondays. It doesn’t beat the cellar or the garden, but if it rains or the heat bites, it’s an hour well spent for nothing.

For the rest of your stroll, St Lawrence’s parish church on rue de l’Eglise marks the centre, with the pedestrian streets and terraces around it. I’d use it as the link between the cellar and the garden, which sit at different ends of the riverside. Mountain bikers can also start the Potaschberg trail here, which sets off beside the foundations of a 2nd-century Roman funerary monument, according to the government portal.

The country’s biggest festival

On the second weekend of September Grevenmacher holds its grape and wine festival, the Drauwen- a Wäifest, which the government portal calls the biggest and one of the oldest in the country, 75 years old in 2025. It opens with the crowning of the Wine Queen and carries on with a parade, concerts and fireworks. In 2026 it ran from 11 to 13 September. In spring, on the Friday after Easter, the town also holds the Maacher Wäimoart, a market for tasting the new vintage. The rest of the calendar is in Luxembourg wine festivals.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Boat and bus

At 10 route du Vin you’ll find the office of the Moselle tourist association, which runs the Princesse Marie-Astrid, and the Grevenmacher tourist information point at the same address. Some sailings on the boat’s programme return by bus from here, on lines 271 or 333. With no station in town, you get here by bus from the capital, and the ride is free. Beds are scarce, a single hotel and a campsite in 2025 according to STATEC, so I’d stay in Remich. With a spare morning, a few kilometres inland you’ll find the ravine forest at Manternach and the Widdebierg walks of Flaxweiler.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Remich and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Grevenmacher?

Tour the Bernard-Massard cellars, visit the butterfly garden by the Moselle, look round the free Kulturhuef museum and stroll the pedestrian centre by St Lawrence's Church. Half a day is enough; a full day if you add a boat.

How do I get to Grevenmacher from Luxembourg City?

By bus, free inside the country, as Grevenmacher isn't on CFL's list of railway stations. The nearest stations in the area are Mertert and Wasserbillig. Times on mobiliteit.lu.

When is the Grevenmacher wine festival?

On the second weekend of September; in 2026 it ran from 11 to 13 September. It's the country's biggest wine festival, with the crowning of the Wine Queen, a parade, concerts and fireworks.

Why is Grevenmacher called the metropolis of the Moselle?

That's how visitluxembourg describes it, as the most town-like place in the valley, with a pedestrian centre, pool, cinema, museum and several cellars. It's also where Luxembourg's Wine Queen lives.

Are there hotels in Grevenmacher?

Very few. STATEC counted a single hotel and a campsite in the commune in 2025. Most visitors stay in Remich or the capital and come over for the day.

Is Grevenmacher a good stop on the way to Trier?

Yes. It sits on the Luxembourg bank on the way north towards Wasserbillig and the German border, so it fits neatly into a day heading for Trier, with a cellar or the butterflies on the way.
