Averages of 1.4 to 2.3°C (35 to 36°F) at Findel
Luxembourg in winter, a city of lights and a sleeping north
In winter Luxembourg averages 1.4 to 2.3°C at Findel, with under 80 hours of sunshine a month and plenty of fog. In return, the capital puts on Winterlights from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, the museums carry on as normal, and February brings carnival and the Buergbrennen bonfires. Several seasonal sights in the north close until spring.

- In winter Findel averages between 1.4°C in January and 2.3°C in December, with little light and plenty of fog.
- Winterlights fills the capital with markets from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
- Shops are shut by law on 25 December and 1 January.
- The Vianden chairlift, the butterfly garden and The Family of Man are seasonal and don't open in midwinter.
For me, winter in Luxembourg is a city break, not a countryside trip. Two or three days in the capital with Winterlights, museums and the odd evening of mulled wine is a well-rounded plan. What I wouldn't do is head north expecting castles and the chairlift to be open, because many close until spring.

Winterlights, six weeks of markets
The Ville de Luxembourg runs Winterlights from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with Christmas markets and entertainment at several spots around the centre.

02 My tip
Two days a year with every shop shut
On 25 December and 1 January the law keeps shops closed, bakeries, patisseries and a few others aside. On 24 and 31 December they close by 18:00 at the latest.

03 My tip
Driving? Winter tyres
In ice, snow or frost, winter tyres marked M+S or with the alpine symbol are compulsory. If you're hiring a car, ask for them at the desk.

04 To save money
Indoor museums, free transport
When it rains or freezes, the capital's museums are the best plan, and getting between them by tram or bus costs nothing anywhere in the country.

What I would book
Winter changes Luxembourg more than any other season. The capital fills with lights and market stalls, while the north shuts much of what opens in summer. Know that before you go and it’s a good time to visit. Don’t, and you may find a stationary chairlift and an afternoon that ends at five.
Not bitter, just dark and damp
MeteoLux’s figures for Findel give averages of 2.3°C in December, 1.4°C in January and 2.2°C in February. That’s not extreme, but the damp makes it feel colder. December tops the rainfall table with 89.5 mm, and December and January together clock up more than 21 foggy days. The sun barely shows, with 41.9 hours in December and 52 in January.
Icy ground appears on about 3.4 days a year, nearly all of them in those two months, and the record low of the series, −20.2°C, dates from 2 February 1956. Snow is possible but can’t be promised; Visit Luxembourg lists snowy sledge runs as one winter option among others. All the numbers are in Luxembourg weather.
Winterlights, the reason to come in December
The Ville de Luxembourg runs Winterlights from 20 November 2026 until Sunday 3 January, its Christmas markets with entertainment across the centre. It’s what makes the capital worth a trip in the darkest weeks of the year. Stalls, mulled wine and the lit-up old town don’t depend on the weather. Markets, hours and atmosphere are covered in Luxembourg Christmas markets.
Two dates to note. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve shops must shut by 18:00, and on 25 December and New Year’s Day the law keeps them closed, bakeries and patisseries apart. Restaurants, hotels and station and airport shops aren’t covered by that rule.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
What shuts for the winter?
Plenty of visitors miss this. The Vianden chairlift stopped on 19 October 2026, having opened in April. The Family of Man, in Clervaux Castle, ends its season on 1 January 2027. Grevenmacher’s butterfly garden opened from April to October, Echternach’s Roman villa isn’t back until 27 March 2027, and until 30 April you can only see Mersch Castle’s museum by booking ahead.
Plenty stays open, though, and some of it is at its best in the quiet months. In October 2026 Vianden Castle kept hours of 10:00 to 17:00, and the capital’s museums don’t follow a season. The table above lists what I’ve been able to confirm.
Indoors and out
In rain or frost I’d stay in the capital and string museums together. Mudam, the National Museum of History and Art or the Lëtzebuerg City Museum will each fill an afternoon, and the free tram links them. They’re ranked in museums in Luxembourg. If you want to skate, Visit Luxembourg also points to the covered rink at Kockelscheuer, just south of the city.
On a clear day the Mullerthal has its own winter charm, but the national portal says paths may be muddy or rerouted, so I’d pick a short stage and ask at the tourist office first. If you’re driving, remember that winter tyres are compulsory in ice, snow or frost.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Getting there from the UK in winter
From the UK, Luxair lists flights to Findel from London City, Edinburgh and Manchester, and airline timetables switch between winter and summer seasons, so check your dates when booking. From Findel, tram T1 runs to the city centre free of charge, which is handy when you land in the dark. Local schools break up for Christmas on 19 December 2026 and go back after 3 January 2027, which is when the markets get busiest. Bring your GHIC for medically necessary treatment, plus travel insurance, and a UK plug adaptor for the type F sockets.
January and February, wine, cheese and bonfires
Once the festive season is over, winter still has a calendar. In January and February the Moselle’s wineries host Wine Cheese Enjoy, according to the regional tourist office. On 2 February children walk the streets with lanterns for Liichtmëssdag, which opens the carnival season, with masked balls in nearly every village and parades such as those in Diekirch, Pétange and Remich, covered in Luxembourg carnival. On the first Sunday after Carnival, Buergbrennen bonfires are lit all over the country to see winter off. Month by month, see Luxembourg in January and Luxembourg in February.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxembourg and choose by the reviews.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Luxembourg in winter?
The Winterlights markets in the capital (20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027), museums, the cathedral and the casemates, and in February carnival and the Buergbrennen bonfires. Up north, Vianden Castle stays open, but many seasonal sights close.
How cold is Luxembourg in winter?
Findel averages 1.4°C in January and 2.3°C in December. For the capital, STATEC gives a January average high of 4.7°C and low of −1.0°C. The cold record is −20.2°C, set in February 1956.
Does it snow in Luxembourg in winter?
It can, but there's no official count of snow days. The capital's tourist office says that with luck there'll be some, and Visit Luxembourg mentions snowy sledge runs as a winter plan. Icy ground turns up about 3.4 days a year.
Is Luxembourg worth visiting in December?
For the capital, yes, especially during Winterlights. For walking in the Mullerthal or the Ardennes, less so: December averages 41.9 hours of sunshine and more than eleven foggy days.
Are shops open over Christmas in Luxembourg?
On 24 and 31 December shops can open until 18:00; on 25 December they're closed by law, and the 26th is a public holiday with reduced hours. Restaurants, bars, hotels and station and airport shops are exempt.
Can you fly to Luxembourg from the UK in winter?
Luxair publishes routes to London City, Manchester and Edinburgh, and timetables change between the winter and summer seasons, so check dates when you book. From Findel, tram T1 reaches the city centre free of charge.
