Over 70 castles, hardly any beds inside
Castle hotels in Luxembourg, fewer than the booking sites suggest
Luxembourg boasts more than 70 castles, yet almost none let you sleep inside. visitluxembourg mentions castle suites without publishing a list, advertises places to stay at Clemency Castle, and the youth hostel network has one at Hollenfels, beside the keep, temporarily closed in 2026. My alternative is to stay in Vianden or Clervaux with the castle in view.

I wouldn't chase a bed inside a Luxembourg castle. I'd stay in Vianden, with the castle floodlit above the town, go in first thing before the coaches, and book dinner in a castle instead, which you genuinely can do at Bourglinster.

What I would keep in mind

01 Most beautiful
Vianden from your window
Seven hotel establishments in 2025 at the foot of an 11th to 14th-century castle. The youth hostel sits on the Montée du Château itself.

02 My tip
Hollenfels, the hostel by the keep
Hollenfels Castle has a keep of nearly 40 m and a youth hostel. In September 2026 the network listed it as temporarily closed, and the castle interior can't be visited because of renovation.
Hollenfels Castle -
03 Worth the splurge
Dinner inside a castle
Bourglinster Castle, 12th century and restored by the state, has a restaurant inside. It's the closest thing to a castle night I can confirm for you.
Bourglinster Castle -
04 Watch out
Château in the name isn't a castle
Plenty of places put château in their name because they're in a manor house or near a castle. Look at photos of the building before paying the premium.

What I would book
- Places to stayBooking.com Hotels in Vianden, below the castle The surest way to sleep with a medieval castle in the window. There aren't many, so I'd book ahead.
- Places to stayBooking.com Hotels in Clervaux, by the white castle A castle housing The Family of Man, an abbey on the hillside and a railway station. My second choice for a castle night.
It’s a lovely idea. Luxembourg, land of castles, and you asleep in a medieval tower above a valley. The government portal talks of more than 70 castles and a thousand years of history, so it sounds easy. It isn’t. Most are ruins, private homes or state monuments you visit by day that shut in the late afternoon. Below is what I could confirm from official sources, and I’ll warn you now that it’s rather less than some booking sites promise.
What the tourist board says
The national tourist board sums up its hotels in one image, from a room in a small family hotel through to a sumptuous suite inside a castle. That’s a sentence, not a list. It doesn’t publish which castles are hotels, and I have no source to check against, so no names from me.
What it does list is something else. In its section on unusual accommodation, alongside treehouses and a mushroom-shaped house, the board advertises several spaces to stay in at Clemency Castle, in the commune of Käerjeng in the south-west. Clemency is also where the Minett Trail starts, the 90 km route through the old mining country. If you want to sleep inside old walls with official backing, it’s the most concrete lead I have, and it puts you in an area hardly anyone visits.
Hollenfels, the hostel that’s closed
My favourite case, and one you can’t take advantage of right now, is Hollenfels. The castle, in the Valley of the Seven Castles, has a keep of nearly 40 metres at about 315 metres above sea level, and beside it ran a youth hostel of the national network. In September 2026 the network listed it as temporarily closed, and visitluxembourg warns that the castle interior can’t be visited because of renovation.
It’s a shame, because a hostel bed under a medieval keep is the sort of experience worth crossing the Channel for. When it reopens, it’ll be the cheapest and most authentic way to sleep by a castle in Luxembourg. Meanwhile, you can see the keep from outside on the Valley of the Seven Castles route, and its history is in Hollenfels Castle.

What about a night in Vianden?
For me, the country’s best castle night isn’t spent inside, it’s spent opposite. Vianden had seven hotel establishments in 2025, and the youth hostel is on the Montée du Château, the lane that climbs to the castle. At night, with the castle floodlit above the Our, the town is transformed. The day-trippers have gone, the restaurants in the pedestrian streets fill with the few who are staying, and you get the place almost to yourself. That, for me, is worth more than any four-poster.
The next morning, going in first thing is the other perk. The castle opens 10am to 5pm from 1 October and adult admission is €13. It’s all in Vianden Castle, with places to stay in hotels in Vianden. Clervaux, whose white castle houses The Family of Man, is the second choice, with a railway station and the Benedictine abbey on the hillside, where the daily 10am mass is sung in Gregorian chant. Staying there and walking up to the abbey in the morning is, to my mind, one of the most peaceful things you can do in the country.
Dining in a castle, however, you can do
If it’s the experience rather than the bed you’re after, there’s a confirmed option. Bourglinster Castle, in Junglinster, dates from the 12th century, passed to the state in 1968, was restored until 1988 and houses a restaurant. Castle visits are by appointment only. Dinner there and a night in the capital, a short drive away, strikes me as a better plan than paying a premium for a château that isn’t one.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The name trap
Many places put château or castle in their name because they occupy a manor house or fortified farm, or simply stand near a castle. I’m not saying they can’t be lovely, only that it’s worth looking at photos of the building before paying for the word. And some castles you’ll never set foot in, such as Berg, the Grand Duke’s main residence, or Senningen, used for government meetings.
If it’s the castles themselves that draw you, the ranking of those you can visit, with prices and opening times, is in castles in Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
