Fun facts, every one checked

Sixteen facts about Luxembourg that are actually true

Luxembourg is the world's only grand duchy, was the first country to make public transport free for everyone, is the only one with Europe Day as a public holiday and has a single Olympic gold, won by Josy Barthel in 1952. Nearly half its residents are foreign nationals, and 237,200 cross-border workers come in every day.

Of all these facts, free public transport is the one that changes your trip. I wouldn't hire a car for the capital at all. Tram, bus, funicular and second-class trains cost nothing, visitors included.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

The first country with free transport

Since 1 March 2020, buses, trams and second-class trains have been free nationwide for residents, commuters and tourists. You only pay for first class and for the stretch that crosses the border.

  2. 02 Most beautiful

Schengen is a village on the Moselle

The agreement that opened Europe's borders was signed on 14 June 1985 on a boat moored at Schengen, a wine village on the Moselle where Luxembourg, Germany and France meet.

  3. 03 My tip

9 May is a bank holiday

Luxembourg is the only country to make Europe Day a public holiday, since 2019. If you're there that day, expect banks and offices to be shut.

    Luxembourg public holidays

Lists of fun facts tend to have one problem, which is that half of them don’t survive a quick check. I’ve done the opposite here. Only facts from the country’s official sources make the cut, the government portal, STATEC or the transport ministry, and where two official sources disagree I say so. There are sixteen, and at least one will save you money. I’ve also put them in a table with the source next to each, so you can check any of them yourself.

A country like no other

The first is the one everyone repeats, and it’s true. Luxembourg is the only grand duchy left in the world, and the government lists it proudly among its surprising figures. Why that doesn’t make it part of anywhere else is covered in is Luxembourg a country.

The second changes how you get around. Since 1 March 2020, Luxembourg has been the first country in the world with free public transport across its whole territory, whether you live there, commute in or are just visiting. Buses, trams and second-class trains cost nothing, and neither does the Kirchberg funicular. You only pay for first class on trains and for any stretch that crosses the border. It’s all explained in Luxembourg free public transport.

The third is on the calendar. No other country gives Europe Day, 9 May, the status of a public holiday, and Luxembourg has done so since 2019. That makes sense once you add the fourth. Robert Schuman, the man behind the 1950 plan that created the ECSC, was born in the capital’s Clausen district in 1886, on 29 June, and grew up speaking Luxembourgish.

Big numbers for a small country

The government portal counts one cathedral, more than 1,271 bridges, 100 castles and over 60 museums. The bridges make sense the moment you see the capital’s valleys, the castles as soon as you head north. It also offers a sporting figure that says a lot. The country has a single Olympic gold medal, won by the runner Josy Barthel at the 1952 Games.

STATEC’s population figures are the kind you read twice. At the start of 2026, 46.6% of the people living there held a foreign passport, from around 180 countries. And on an average working day in 2025, 237,200 people crossed the border to work from France, Germany and Belgium. There’s more in Luxembourg population.

One more from public life. Voting is compulsory, and turnout at the 2023 general election was almost 90%. And the tallest building in the country isn’t a bank or a hotel but the third tower of the EU Court of Justice, opened in 2019.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.

Stories that sound made up but aren’t

My favourite involves belugas. In 2019 Cargolux, the cargo airline based at the airport, flew two belugas from China to Iceland, and the government includes it among its surprising figures. It’s also true that «Non-violence», the revolver with a knotted barrel outside the UN in New York, was a gift from Luxembourg in 1988, and there’s another original at the European Commission building in Kirchberg.

Two more have a period flavour. After the fortress was dismantled, the old glacis filled with rose gardens, and in the Belle Époque Luxembourg was known as the land of roses. And before steel made it rich it was a country of emigrants, so much so that in 1908 some 16,000 Luxembourgers were living in Chicago.

Traditions with a date

If it’s customs you’re after, these come with a calendar. National Day is 23 June even though the current Grand Duke’s birthday is in November. In Wiltz an American «Saint Nick» has toured the streets since December 1944, when soldiers of the US 28th Infantry Division organised a party for the town’s children. In Echternach the dancing procession on Whit Tuesday has been UNESCO intangible heritage since 2010. And on Easter Monday the capital holds the Éimaischen market, with its bird-shaped clay whistles. The year’s fixed dates are in Luxembourg public holidays.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.

The fact with a footnote

I’ll tell the last one carefully. The government portal says Luxembourg has the world’s highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants per head; the national tourist board says second, behind Japan. Since both are official and they disagree, I’ll stick to what both support. It’s among the highest in the world.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxembourg and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
