Ettelbruck, Patton Town and street art

Ettelbruck is a town of 10,212 people in northern Luxembourg where the trains and buses serving the whole Éislek meet. Troops of Patton's Third Army liberated it on 25 December 1944, a story told in its museum. It also has murals across its walls, the country's biggest agricultural show and the start of the Escapardenne Lee Trail.

  • Ettelbruck has 10,212 residents and is the rail and bus hub of the north.
  • A regiment of Patton's Third Army liberated it on 25 December 1944.
  • The Patton museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:00, for €5.
  • The Escapardenne Lee Trail starts here, and it hosts the country's biggest farm show.

Ettelbruck isn't pretty in the picture-postcard sense, but it's the most useful town in the north for getting around. I'd use it to start the Lee Trail, or as a two-hour stop between trains for the Patton museum and the murals.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Getting there

The transport hub of the north

From Ettelbruck the train crosses the whole Éislek to Belgium, and buses make Vianden, Diekirch, Colmar-Berg, Schieren, Clervaux, Troisvierges and Esch-sur-Sûre easy to reach, according to visitluxembourg.

  2. 02 Most beautiful

    A street art trail

Luxembourgish and international artists have painted walls all over town. The tourist office runs a Street Art Tour with Visit Éislek to see them.

  3. 03 My tip

The Lee Trail starts at the station

Stage one of the Escapardenne Lee Trail, 18 km to Bourscheid-Moulin, starts at Ettelbruck station. It's certified as a Leading Quality Trail.

    General Patton museum in Ettelbruck

Ettelbruck won’t appear on anyone’s list of Luxembourg’s prettiest villages, and I doubt it wants to. It’s something else, a town of 10,212 people that works as the centre of the Nordstad and the great crossroads of the north. visitluxembourg puts it barely 20 minutes by car from the capital, and from here the train runs across the whole Éislek into Belgium. If you travel by public transport you’ll almost certainly pass through Ettelbruck anyway, and I think it’s worth getting off for a couple of hours.

Patton Town

Ettelbruck goes by the nickname Patton Town. According to the town’s museum, the general launched his attack on the southern flank of the German offensive in December 1944, and the 318th Regiment of his 80th Infantry Division liberated Ettelbruck on 25 December after several days of bitter fighting. The town was badly damaged.

In 1947 a northern cycling club staged a General Patton Grand Prix, and from that came the idea of a memorial, unveiled on 16 May 1954 by Prince Félix with the general’s son in attendance. That day Remembrance Day was born, and it was held every year until 2004. In 1970 a bronze statue of the general was added, a copy of the one at West Point, and a 2024 makeover added a new Liberation Route Europe marker and three silhouettes donated by the US Embassy. Cycling still comes through town, too. On 19 September 2026 Ettelbruck hosted the 20.4 km time trial of the Tour de Luxembourg.

The Patton museum in Ettelbruck tells the whole story, from the 1940 invasion to the liberation, with more than a thousand photographs and a room on the aircraft that came down over the country. You can visit Tuesday to Sunday until 17:00 for €5. The wider story of the offensive has its own guide on this site.

Murals, the CAPE and the biggest farm show

In recent years Ettelbruck has become one of Luxembourg’s street art hotspots. Luxembourgish and international artists have painted walls around town, each piece with its own theme and message, and the town’s tourist office organises guided Street Art Tours together with the regional office. There’s work by Spike, visible from the town hall car park, by Vidam on the Äschenhiwwel and by Martine Koetz in the Alzette park. For me that’s the town’s best feature, because it gives the town a face you don’t expect.

The CAPE, the Centre des Arts Pluriels, is one of the main arts venues in the north, with music, visual arts and dance. For listings around the rest of the country, my guide covers all the main theatres and concert venues in Luxembourg. And the Foire Agricole is the country’s biggest agricultural show, a shop window for Luxembourg farming that visitluxembourg also calls the largest open-air fair in the country. The dates of the next one hadn’t been published at the end of September 2026.

One curiosity to finish, Luxembourg’s national anthem, Ons Heemecht, was first performed in public in Ettelbruck in 1864.

Walking and cycling from the station

The first of the three stages of the Escapardenne Lee Trail, 18 km to Bourscheid-Moulin, starts at the station. It’s certified as a Leading Quality Trail by the European Ramblers’ Association, and you can carry on along the Escapardenne Éislek Trail, five more stages into Belgium. For something shorter, a 9.23 km circular walk explores the hills east of town, and CFL rail trail 11 walks you to Diekirch in 11.62 km. By bike, the PC15 cycle path follows the Alzette to the Mullerthal.

With children, the Um Kalleksuewen leisure area, where lime was once burnt, has a play area, picnic spot and a view over the town.

Getting there, staying and the essentials

The station, at 1 place de la Gare, has a lift, 110 free car parking spaces and a waiting room open on weekdays from 5:00 to 21:30. Watch out for two October 2026 weekends, the 10th-11th and 17th-18th, when buses replace trains north of town. The town also has the Centre Hospitalier du Nord, with a 24-hour emergency department, and an out-of-hours GP surgery on avenue Lucien Salentiny; bring your GHIC.

STATEC counted a single hotel and one campsite in 2025, so it pays to search hotels in Diekirch and Ettelbruck side by side. Nearby are Schieren, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre and Feulen. With the first two and Diekirch, Ettelbruck is negotiating a merger into a single Nordstad commune, and the official timetable points to a referendum in autumn 2027.
