Walferdange Castle, an ochre three-storey building, with a fountain playing in the pond of the front garden

Walferdange is a municipality of 9,256 people (1-1-2026) just north of the capital, with three localities, Bereldange, Helmsange and Walferdange. visitguttland highlights the Raschpëtzer in Helmsange, an underground Roman aqueduct, a trail through old gypsum mines, the PIDAL pool and the Walfer Bicherdeeg, a book fair held every November.

Walferdange is the Roman day out that hardly anyone takes from the capital. I'd walk the Raschpëtzer trail in Helmsange, which shows you how the Romans moved water underground, and in November I'd check the date of the Walfer Bicherdeeg.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The Raschpëtzer, Roman water underground

visitguttland describes it as an underground aqueduct and a fine example of Roman engineering. A trail in Helmsange follows it past the remains of a Roman villa and the Sonnebierg nature reserve.

    Steinsel
  2. 02 My tip

    Gypsum mines since antiquity

Gypsum was mined in Walferdange from ancient times, according to visitguttland, and a trail from Bereldange tells the story. It's a short walk and free.

  3. 03 Worth the splurge

    The Walfer Bicherdeeg

Every November the municipality holds the Walfer Bicherdeeg, its book fair. visitguttland doesn't give the 2026 dates, so check the municipal website before planning around it.

Walferdange starts right where the capital ends to the north. It has 9,256 residents in three localities, Bereldange, Helmsange and Walferdange, and a small area of about 7 km². Following the Alzette north you reach Lorentzweiler and Lintgen, each with its own railway station. It looks like just another suburb, but beneath its woods lies one of the more intriguing things in the country, to my mind.

What are the Raschpëtzer?

An underground aqueduct from Roman times, deep in the woods. visitguttland calls it an eloquent example of Roman engineering, and a trail in Helmsange follows its course. On the same walk you pass the remains of a Roman villa and enter the Sonnebierg nature reserve. The aqueduct is shared with neighbouring Steinsel, which has a Roman sanctuary of its own.

I like it because it’s Roman history that doesn’t need a museum. It’s out there in the landscape, and it makes sense on foot.

The figures visitluxembourg gives are striking. The qanat, the name for this system of tunnels and shafts that began in the deserts of Iran, was built around AD 130, runs for 700 metres, reaches 36 metres deep and still delivers 180 cubic metres of drinking water a day. The same site calls it the largest of its kind north of the Alps. It’s open from 1 April to 31 October, reached from the CR 125 road in Helmsange. To walk in, the Guttland.Trail Raschpëtzer starts and ends at Walferdange station, passes through the Sonnebierg reserve, along old railway tracks and past the gypsum mines, and covers 5.9 km in 1 hr 50; there’s a shorter 4.4 km version.

The Roman villa at Helmsange

The qanat’s water fed a large villa, and its remains are in Helmsange, at Cité Princesse Amélie. visitluxembourg dates it to the 1st century and says it had 50 rooms and measured 100 by 50 metres, which puts it among the largest Roman villas found in the country. It’s an open-air site and dogs are welcome. I’d save it as the walk’s last stop, because once you’ve seen the tunnel, the size of the house it supplied makes far more sense.

Gypsum, murals and an old warehouse

Walferdange was mining country too. Gypsum was dug here from ancient times, says visitguttland, and a themed trail from Bereldange follows its traces. Holy Trinity church has murals painted in 1903 by the German artist Gerhard Lamers, while Walferdange’s own church, neoclassical in style, was built between 1845 and 1852.

Culture has two homes of its own. The CAW is a space for exchange and creativity for adults and children, and the Walfer Kulturschapp is a former goods depot turned exhibition venue. Every November the municipality holds the Walfer Bicherdeeg, which visitguttland calls a flagship event of Luxembourg’s cultural life, bringing together authors, readers, publishers, collectors and second-hand booksellers. visitguttland doesn’t list the 2026 dates, so the municipal website is the place to confirm them before you plan anything.

The castle, from outside

Walferdange’s castle-residence is a three-storey ochre building with an ornamental pond in front. visitluxembourg says it houses a university faculty, but that may no longer be current, so I can’t promise what it’s used for today. What I can say is that none of the sources I’ve read list it as open to visitors, and it looks good from the road.

For a rainy day

visitguttland mentions the PIDAL pool, with swimming pools, saunas, a generous spa, wellness and beauty offer and somewhere to eat. If the weather turns and you have children with you, it’s an alternative to the capital’s museums just a few minutes away. There are more ideas like this in Luxembourg with kids.

Who it suits

Walkers with an interest in history, above all. The Raschpëtzer and gypsum trails ask nothing of you but a pair of comfortable shoes, and in November book lovers have their own reason to come. If you’re after a castle to explore inside or a big museum, look elsewhere.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxembourg on GetYourGuide.

Fitting it in

I’d treat Walferdange as a half-day trip from Luxembourg City, starting with the Raschpëtzer in Helmsange and carrying on to Steinsel if your legs allow. For getting about, free public transport covers the whole area.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
