The Octave begins on Saturday 17 April 2027
Luxembourg in April, when the walking season properly starts
Luxembourg in April averages 9.6°C at Findel, with 197.5 hours of sunshine and just 49.4 mm of rain, the lowest figure of the year. There are no bank holidays in April 2027, since Easter Monday falls on 29 March, but the Octave of Our Lady starts on the 17th and seasonal sights in the north, such as the Vianden chairlift, come back to life.

- April is the driest month at Findel, with 49.4 mm of rain and a 9.6°C average.
- There are no bank holidays in April 2027, as Easter Monday falls on 29 March.
- The Octave of Our Lady runs from Saturday 17 April to Sunday 2 May 2027.
- The Vianden chairlift, seasonal gardens and the walkers' luggage service all restart.
If you're coming for the walking, April is the month I'd book. It rains less than at any other time of year, the valleys have turned green and the summer crowds are months away. I'd just skip the first few days of April 2027, when Luxembourg's Easter school break is still running.

02 My tip
The driest month on the calendar
MeteoLux puts April at 49.4 mm of rain at Findel, less than any other month. For long days on the Mullerthal or in the Ardennes, it's the safest bet of the spring.

03 Getting there
Your bags travel on their own from 1 April
The service that moves luggage between hotels on multi-day walks starts its season on 1 April, according to Visit Luxembourg, so you only carry a day pack.

Free trains up to the castles
Buses, trams and second-class trains are free across Luxembourg, visitors included, so reaching Vianden or Clervaux costs nothing. Only first class and the cross-border leg are charged.

What I would book
April is the month I’d pick for anyone who wants to see Luxembourg on foot. It’s drier than any other time of year, the forests of the north are coming back into leaf and you get the country before the summer crowds arrive. Here’s what to expect in 2027 and how I’d spend a week.
Dry days and cold mornings
MeteoLux’s averages for Findel put April at 9.6°C (49°F), with 197.5 hours of sunshine and 49.4 mm of rain. That rainfall figure is the reason I rate it so highly, because no other month comes in lower. STATEC’s numbers for the capital give average highs of 15.3°C and lows of 3.5°C, which in practice means a coat at breakfast and a jumper by lunchtime.
Fog is rare (1.8 days) and thunderstorms few, 2.2 on average. The extremes are a reminder not to pack too lightly, though. Findel reached 27.9°C on 20 April 2018 and fell to −6.9°C on 12 April 1986, and April 2007 logged 325.1 hours of sunshine, the most for the month in the whole series. The full year is laid out in Luxembourg weather.
What about Easter?
In 2027, April misses it. Easter Monday is on 29 March, so the Easter festivities, Éimaischen and the bank holiday all belong to Luxembourg in March. What spills into April is the tail of Luxembourg’s school break, which lasts until Sunday 11 April. Expect more families at the castles those first days, and book a little earlier than usual.
One thing that does hang on Easter is the Maacher Wäimoart, the wine market Grevenmacher holds on the Friday after it, according to the Moselle tourist office. It’s a good reason to head down to the river and taste the first wines of the year.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Echternach for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The north opens up again
April is when Luxembourg reopens for the season. In 2026 the Vianden chairlift started running on 4 April and Grevenmacher’s butterfly garden opened on the 1st. Neither had announced its 2027 dates when September 2026 ended, so it’s worth checking Visit Luxembourg the week before you go. Vianden Castle itself doesn’t depend on the chairlift, so a trip up there works either way.
For walkers, the more useful change is the luggage service. From 1 April your bags can be collected at one hotel and dropped at the next, which makes multi-day routes far easier. The Mullerthal Trail in April, with little rain and long days, is the best thing you can do this month.
The Octave and the Mäertchen
On Saturday 17 April 2027 the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg begins, the country’s main religious festival. It has been held since 1666, when epidemics, wars and famine led people to choose the Virgin Mary as consoler of the afflicted, and today it lasts sixteen days, until 2 May. Pilgrims come to the cathedral from all over Luxembourg and the neighbouring regions to see her statue.
Outside, on Place Guillaume II, the Mäertchen sets up. It began as a way of feeding pilgrims who’d walked in fasting and heard mass, and these days it’s closer to a fair, with games, rides and food stalls. In spring I can’t think of a nicer way to share the old town with locals.
That same weekend, 17 and 18 April 2027, the capital runs the DKV Urban Trail, which starts from the Saint-Esprit plateau and mixes old-town cobbles with paths along the Alzette. If you run, it’s the shorter, more off-road alternative to the Luxembourg Marathon three weeks later; if you don’t, I’d avoid leaving a hotel in the old town to the last minute for those two nights.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Echternach for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
How I’d plan it
Two or three days of countryside and one or two in the capital. Echternach as a base for the Mullerthal, a morning at Vianden for the castle and, in the second half of the month, the city for the Octave. On the third Sunday the Glacis also hosts the Glacismaart, a market with flowers, fruit and local produce from 10:00 to 17:00.
Getting there is simple. Land at Findel and ride the tram into town at no cost, or travel by rail, changing in Brussels or Paris. You’re outside Schengen, so check your passport is under ten years old and valid for three months after you leave, and allow time for the EES biometric check at your first entry. After landing, you won’t pay for buses, trams or second-class trains. If you’re walking for several days, pack your GHIC or EHIC alongside proper travel insurance, and a plug adapter, because sockets are the continental type F at 230 V. Every trailhead on the national network can be reached by public transport or has parking, according to Visit Luxembourg, so walking here doesn’t require a hire car. The rest of the season is in Luxembourg in spring, the broader question of dates in best time to visit Luxembourg, and the month after, with its bank holidays and Whitsun, in Luxembourg in May.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Echternach on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
