- July is Luxembourg's warmest month, 18.7°C (66°F) on average at Findel, and its sunniest, with 257.6 hours.
- Expect around eight thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon; the heat record is 39.0°C, set on 25 July 2019.
- Ehnen's wine festival falls on the third weekend and Diekirch's Al Dikkrich starts on the second Friday.
- Local school holidays begin on 16 July 2027, and the lakes fill up from then on.
July suits a trip built around water and long evenings. Coming from the UK, where schools break up later, I'd aim for the first half of the month, before Luxembourg's own holidays start on 16 July 2027, and I'd do any walking in the morning, because the afternoon storm is almost a fixture.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 My tip
Walk early, the storm comes later
Findel logs eight thunderstorms in an average July, mostly in the afternoon. On the Mullerthal or in the Ardennes I'd start early and be back before mid-afternoon.
Luxembourg weather -
02 Most beautiful
A whole day at the Upper Sûre lake
The northern reservoir has supervised lawn beaches, paddling from Lultzhausen and a solar-powered boat. On a hot July day it's where I'd head first.

03 Worth the splurge
Inside the Grand Ducal Palace, summer only
Guided tours of the interior only run in summer. In 2026 they ran from 18 July to 30 August at €18 for adults and sold out. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced by the end of September 2026.

04 To save money
Free buses and trains to the lakes
Public transport is free nationwide in second class, so reaching the northern lakes or the Moselle costs nothing and spares you the summer hunt for a parking space.

What I would book
July in Luxembourg doesn’t feel like July at home, and I mean that as a compliment. The evenings go on and on, it’s warm without being oppressive most days, the lakes are open and the Moselle villages start their round of wine festivals. The catch is the afternoon thunderstorm, which turns up often enough that I plan around it. Get that right and the month largely organises itself.
Warmest month, and one of the stormiest
MeteoLux’s normals put Findel at 18.7°C (66°F) in July, the highest monthly average of the year, with 257.6 hours of sunshine. For the capital, STATEC gives an average high of 24.9°C (77°F) and a low of 12.4°C (54°F), so evenings cool down and a light layer is worth packing. Rainfall is about 72 mm and fog all but disappears, barely one day in the month.
What defines July is the storms, eight on average, usually arriving after a clear morning. Proper heat is rare, but the all-time record belongs to this month, 39.0°C (102°F) on 25 July 2019. At the other end, Findel once dropped to 4.5°C in July, back in 1954. Every other month is covered in Luxembourg weather.
Where can you swim in July?
Luxembourg is landlocked, but July life revolves around water. Official bathing is limited to four lakes, between May and September, since no river is designated for swimming. My first choice would be the Upper Sûre, with its supervised lawns and paddling from Lultzhausen; my second, Remerschen by the Moselle, where you pay to get in and the gates close at 3,000 people. All four, rules included, are in swimming lakes in Luxembourg.
One habit I’d recommend is checking the official bathing website on the morning you go. Hot spells bring cyanobacteria, and a site can close overnight even when its water is rated excellent.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Esch-sur-Sûre on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Wine villages and a Diekirch street party
For me the month’s best festival is on the river. In its old village centre, Ehnen celebrates the Éiner Wënzerdag over July’s third weekend, and in 2026 neighbouring Wellenstein put on its Welleschter Kiermes at the end of the month, one of the best-loved fairs in the country. From there the wine villages hand the baton on, weekend after weekend, until the harvest. The whole calendar is in Luxembourg wine festivals.
Up north, Diekirch starts Al Dikkrich on the second Friday of July, five days of concerts and stalls around the old church of St Laurent, a festival that began in 1968. In the south, Esch-sur-Alzette has hosted the country’s Pride Parade every July since 2015, together with the Gaymat street festival.
The palace, if you’re quick
This is the only time of year you can go inside. In 2026 the guided tours, around 75 minutes with a maximum of 22 people, ran from 18 July to 30 August at €18 for adults and €9 for ages 4 to 12, and the capital’s tourist office declared them sold out. For 2027, the 50th year of the tours, no dates had been announced by the end of September 2026. If it matters to you, I’d keep an eye out from spring and book the moment they appear. What you see and how the tour works is covered in Grand Ducal Palace.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Esch-sur-Sûre on Expedia and filter by area before price.
School holidays and getting there
Luxembourg’s schools close on 16 July 2027 and don’t return until 14 September. You notice it at the lakes, the campsites and in Ardennes villages at weekends far more than in the capital, which actually thins out a little as office workers go away. English schools break up later, so the first half of July is a window worth using if you’re not tied to term dates.
Getting there is straightforward. Findel sits a short tram ride from the centre, and the alternative from London is the train, changing in Brussels or Paris, where the TGV covers the last leg in roughly 2 hours 10 minutes. Once you’ve arrived, trams, buses and second-class trains are free. July has no bank holidays, so shops keep normal hours all month, within the legal ceiling of 5:00 to 21:00 on weekdays.
How I’d split a week
A morning walk in the Mullerthal, back before the storms; a lake day on the Upper Sûre; an afternoon on the Moselle if you can match the third weekend; and the capital for the rest, with the palace if you’ve managed a ticket. Coming from June, Luxembourg in June covers what you’ve just missed, and what’s next, including the big funfair on the Glacis, is in Luxembourg in August. The whole season sits in Luxembourg in summer, while the twelve months are compared in best time to visit Luxembourg.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Esch-sur-Sûre and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions
What's the weather like in Luxembourg in July?
Warm and bright with thunderstorms. Findel averages 18.7°C (66°F) and STATEC gives the capital average highs of 24.9°C (77°F) and lows of 12.4°C (54°F). July has the most sunshine of the year, 257.6 hours, and about 72 mm of rain, often in afternoon downpours.
Is Luxembourg hot in July?
Not usually, but heatwaves do happen. Findel's all-time record, 39.0°C (102°F), was set on 25 July 2019. In hot, dry spells Visit Luxembourg asks visitors to follow the official wildfire advice.
Can you swim in Luxembourg in July?
Yes, but only at the approved bathing areas of four lakes, the Upper Sûre, Echternach, Weiswampach and Remerschen. The season runs from 1 May to 30 September, and no river is a designated bathing site.
What festivals are on in Luxembourg in July?
Ehnen's Éiner Wënzerdag on the third weekend, Al Dikkrich in Diekirch for five days from the second Friday, and the Pride Parade in Esch-sur-Alzette, held every July since 2015.
Can you visit the Grand Ducal Palace in July?
Only in summer, and only with a ticket bought early. In 2026 the guided tours ran from 18 July to 30 August at €18 for adults and €9 for children aged 4 to 12. The 2027 dates weren't published by late September 2026.
Is July a good time to visit Luxembourg from the UK?
Yes, especially the first half. Luxembourg's schools break up on 16 July 2027, after which the lakes and northern villages get busier at weekends. Remember the Schengen rules on arrival, with the EES biometric check the first time you enter.
