Seven hotel establishments for 2,243 residents
Hotels in Vianden, a night beneath the castle
Vianden (Veianen) had 7 hotel establishments and 3 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC, for a town of 2,243 people on the River Our. visitluxembourg lists hotels, campsites and holiday flats. Staying the night gives you the castle, the chairlift and the high street before and after the day-trippers, which is when the place really comes into its own.

- Vianden had 7 hotels and 3 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC.
- Staying the night gives you the castle and the high street without the day-trippers.
- There's no railway; a direct bus runs from Diekirch, free of charge.
- The castle opens 10am-5pm from 1 October; adults €13.
Of all Luxembourg's small towns, Vianden is where I most recommend spending the night. The castle above the Our at dusk and an empty high street at 8am are a different trip from the one people get when they arrive at 11 and leave at 4.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The castle before the crowds
The castle, built between the 11th and 14th centuries and state-owned since 1977, opens at 10am. Stay in town and you're among the first up the hill, ahead of the coach parties.

02 To save money
LuxembourgPass covers the chairlift and Victor Hugo
visitluxembourg marks the chairlift and the Victor Hugo house as free with the pass. A one-day pass is €23 per person, the price published in September 2026.

03 Getting there
No train, but a bus from Diekirch
Vianden has had no station since the Benny Express closed in 1948. visitluxembourg says there are direct connections from Diekirch to Vianden and its castle.

04 My tip
Six walks start in town
According to visitluxembourg, six trails set off from Vianden, towards the castle or into the Our valley, and the Ourdall Promenade is accessible and family-friendly.
Vianden
What I would book
If you’re only spending one night outside the capital, make it Vianden. It’s a town of 2,243 people tucked into the Our valley on the German border, with a vast castle on the hill and a high street that runs down to the river. By day it gets plenty of day-trippers; in the evening, and above all first thing, it’s somewhere else entirely. That’s why this page exists, and why I’d push you to stay.
How much accommodation there is
In 2025, STATEC’s count gave Vianden seven hotel establishments, unchanged on the previous year, plus three campsites. The canton’s other two communes, Tandel and Putscheid, had no hotels at all, although each had a campsite. visitluxembourg adds that Vianden also has holiday flats.
In practical terms, supply is small for somewhere so popular. In summer and over long weekends I wouldn’t leave booking to the last minute, and for a family I’d look at a flat as well.
Why stay rather than visit for the day?
Because in Vianden, more than almost anywhere in Luxembourg, the hour you visit changes the experience. Vianden Castle opens at 10am, and whoever sleeps in town is first up the hill. From 1 October it closes at 5pm, so in autumn the afternoon runs short for anyone driving up from the capital mid-morning.
Then there’s the evening. The restaurants and cafés of the pedestrian zone look out over the Our, according to visitluxembourg, and the castle above the valley at dusk, seen from the bridge with the Victor Hugo statue, is not a view you get on a day trip. For me, that’s the best reason of all.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Upper town or lower town
The town has two levels, and that matters when choosing a hotel. The lower part, by the bridge and the river, is easier with luggage and for setting out on valley walks. The upper part, on the way to the castle, puts you closer to the climb and gives better views, at the price of some hills.
There’s no official breakdown of hotels by street, so my advice is to check the map before booking. Without a car, stay low; if you want the valley from your window, go high.
By name, visitluxembourg has listings for three hotels in town. The Belle-Vue, at 3 rue de la Gare, calls itself an eco-friendly hotel, with an indoor pool and sauna free for guests, an à la carte restaurant and a terrace, 900 metres from the castle. The Petry, on the same street, has 26 rooms, views of the Our and the castle, two restaurants, one a pizzeria with a wood-fired oven, and a spa area with a sauna at extra cost; it belongs to the Logis chain. The Heintz, at 55 Grand-rue, has 28 rooms and its listing gives a season from 29 March to 10 November. If you asked me for one for an autumn break, I’d say the Belle-Vue, for the pool thrown in when the weather turns.
What to do with the time you gain
The chairlift, the only one in the country according to visitluxembourg, rises over the Our to a terrace with a view. It runs in season, from 4 April to 19 October in 2026, and costs €9.50 return. The Victor Hugo House, where the writer stayed in 1871, opens Tuesday to Sunday and costs €6, free up to 25. Six walking routes leave from the town itself, including the Ourdall Promenade, which is accessible and easy for families.
If you have a LuxembourgPass, visitluxembourg lists both the chairlift and the Victor Hugo House as free with it. For two days in the north, it pays for itself.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
If you stay a second night
With two nights, the valley fills a whole day without repetition. Upstream in Stolzembourg, the old copper mine museum has a 1.5 km geology trail and costs €9. Westwards in the commune of Tandel, the ruins of Brandenbourg Castle are free to enter, with the Kinneksknäppchen viewpoint nearby. And in town, the Fändelchen and the top of the chairlift are the two viewpoints Visit Éislek lists for Vianden.
Getting there without a car
Vianden had a railway from 1889 to 1948, the Benny Express, linking it with Diekirch. There’s no station today, but according to visitluxembourg you can ride straight from Diekirch to Vianden and its castle. Diekirch is on CFL line 10, which climbs north from the capital. The whole journey is free within Luxembourg, and timetables are on mobiliteit.lu. Remember that the Our is the border here. The far bank is Germany, and free travel on cross-border buses only runs as far as the last stop before the frontier.
If you’d rather sleep somewhere with a station and pop over to Vianden for the day, the obvious alternative is hotels in Diekirch. For the town itself, its history and its streets, see the Vianden guide, and for the rest of the north, where to stay in Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
