A romantic weekend in Luxembourg, from the Corniche to the Moselle
For a romantic break, Luxembourg packs a lot into a small space, from the Chemin de la Corniche, which a Luxembourgish writer called Europe's most beautiful balcony, evenings in the Grund by the Alzette, Vianden Castle, the crémant cellars of the Moselle and the country's only thermal spring at Mondorf-les-Bains. All less than an hour from the capital.

- The Chemin de la Corniche is the capital's most beautiful walk, and it's free.
- The LCTO recommends the Grund for a romantic evening.
- Vianden Castle costs €13 per adult and the train there is free.
- The Moselle combines crémant, vineyards and the country's only thermal spring at Mondorf.
I'd split the weekend in two. One day in the capital, with the Corniche at sunset and dinner in the Grund, and one day out, choosing between Vianden Castle and an afternoon of crémant on the Moselle. With an extra day, I'd add the Mondorf spa.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The Corniche at dusk
The LCTO notes that writer Batty Weber called it «le plus beau balcon de l'Europe». It runs from the Bock to the old citadel along 17th-century ramparts.
Chemin de la Corniche -
02 Worth the splurge
A drink on a rooftop
The tourist office singles out rooftop bars such as L'Observatoire, on the eighth floor of the Sofitel, overlooking the old town and the Grund, for a romantic evening.
Luxembourg nightlife -
03 To save money
The train to Vianden is free
Public transport costs nothing within Luxembourg, so your day trip north only costs the castle ticket, €13 per adult.
Vianden -
04 Worth the splurge
Dinner with a star
Luxembourg has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants for its population. For a special night, you won't have to look far.

An afternoon of crémant on the Moselle
More than 40 wineries and estates along the river and a sparkling wine with its own appellation since 1991.

Mondorf-les-Bains spa
The country's only thermal spring, a few minutes from the Moselle vineyards. A good way to end the weekend.

Luxembourg rarely makes the lists of romantic city breaks, and I think that’s a mistake. A single weekend fits a rampart walk above a green valley, dinner by the river, a fairy-tale castle, an afternoon of sparkling wine among the vines and a thermal spa, and once you’ve landed you don’t need a car or a train ticket. Here’s how I’d plan it. If you also fancy a treat for the night, I keep a separate list of luxury hotels in Luxembourg.
Why Luxembourg for a weekend for two?
It’s all about scale. The capital’s tourist office points out that nowhere in the country is more than an hour from Luxembourg City, and that changes the pace of a short break. You don’t lose half a day on the road, and because buses, trains and trams are free, a car is optional. Fly into Findel or arrive by train and you can get about without hiring anything. From the UK, Luxair publishes a direct route from London City, and the LCTO notes that the capital is also well linked by train and coach with the airports of Brussels, Charleroi, Frankfurt and Paris, so a Friday-to-Sunday break is realistic without taking a day off either side.
The capital, between the Corniche and the Grund
The first plan costs nothing and sits right in the centre. The Chemin de la Corniche links the Bock rock with the old citadel on top of 17th-century walls, and the LCTO recalls that writer Batty Weber called it «le plus beau balcon de l’Europe». My moment for it is late afternoon, with the lights of the Grund coming on below. What you see from up there is covered in Chemin de la Corniche.
Then head down. The tourist office describes the Grund as a district for daytime strolls and lively evenings, with bars, pubs and restaurants, and recommends it outright for a romantic night. A lift connects it with the Saint-Esprit plateau, so there’s no hill to climb on the way back. For a drink with a view, the LCTO lists several rooftops, including L’Observatoire on the eighth floor of the Sofitel, looking out over the old town and the Grund.
For a dinner you’ll remember, Luxembourg is on home ground, as few places have so many Michelin-starred restaurants for the size of their population. It isn’t cheap, but you won’t need to cross town for a good table, and I’d book well ahead for a Saturday night.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
A castle day in Vianden
My favourite plan outside the capital is up north. Vianden Castle, which grew over four centuries on Roman and Carolingian remains, towers over the village and the river Our. Tickets are €13 per adult and in autumn it opens from 10am to 5pm. I’d go first thing and leave the afternoon for the village, the riverside and, if you fancy it, the chairlift. The village has its own page, Vianden.
An afternoon of crémant on the Moselle
The alternative is the south-east. The Luxembourg bank of the Moselle has more than forty wineries and estates, according to the country’s official portal, and crémant de Luxembourg has had its own appellation since 1991. Remich has a 3 km riverside promenade under lime and cherry trees, and at Wormeldange the Koeppchen chapel crowns a vineyard with a slope of more than 70 degrees. You can also see it from the water, as boats such as the Princesse Marie-Astrid and the Navitours fleet sail the river. How to link villages and cellars is in Luxembourg Moselle wine route.
To finish, Mondorf-les-Bains, close to the vineyards, has the country’s only thermal spring. I couldn’t read the spa’s prices, so I won’t quote them, but as the end of a weekend for two it’s hard to beat. It’s covered in Mondorf domaine thermal.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
When to go
The LCTO singles out autumn, with the Pétrusse valley in gold, and winter for its Christmas markets. Winterlights opens its stalls on 20 November 2026 and keeps them going until 3 January, and the Fête des Vins et Crémants runs from 27 to 29 November. For me, the last weekend of November gets you both, and a glass of crémant under the lit-up old town has its charm. If you’d rather have green and warmth, May and June are the months I’d pick for the Corniche and the Moselle.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
A weekend for two, the way I'd do it
| When | Plan | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Friday evening | Walk the Chemin de la Corniche, dinner in the Grund | The walk is free |
| Saturday morning | Train or bus north to Vianden Castle | Transport free; castle €13 per adult |
| Saturday afternoon | Wander the village and the banks of the Our | Free |
| Sunday | Moselle, a crémant cellar and a stroll in Remich | Depends on the winery |
| If there's time | Mondorf-les-Bains spa | Depends on the spa's rates |
My own suggestion. Vianden Castle price from Visit Luxembourg (September 2026). Public transport free within Luxembourg since 1 March 2020.

Frequently asked questions
Is Luxembourg good for a romantic weekend?
For a weekend, yes. Castles, vineyards and forest are all within an hour of the capital, and the city itself has spots like the Corniche and the Grund that the tourist office recommends for a romantic evening.
What are the most romantic things to do in Luxembourg?
I'd walk the Chemin de la Corniche at sunset, have dinner in the Grund, spend a day at Vianden Castle and another tasting crémant on the Moselle. If there's time, the Mondorf-les-Bains spa is the perfect finish.
Where should couples eat in Luxembourg City?
The Grund is the area the LCTO recommends for a romantic evening, with bars, pubs and restaurants by the Alzette. For a special occasion, Luxembourg has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants for its population.
What is the most romantic place in Luxembourg?
For me, the Chemin de la Corniche, the rampart walk Batty Weber called Europe's most beautiful balcony. Outside the capital, Vianden with its castle above the river Our.
When is the best time for a romantic trip to Luxembourg?
The tourist office highlights autumn colours in the Pétrusse valley and winter for the Christmas markets. Winterlights runs from 20 November 2026 into early January, and the wine and crémant festival takes place from 27 to 29 November 2026.
