Moersdorf, a stop on the Sûre for walkers and cyclists

Moersdorf is one of the 14 localities of Rosport-Mompach, on the River Sûre along the German border. Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail passes through, and in the operator's six-stage plan the first day ends here; the village is also the start of a short, steep circular walk and of the Sûre cycle path to Rosport.

  • Moersdorf is a Rosport-Mompach village on the Sûre, facing Germany.
  • It's the end of day one in the Mullerthal Trail's six-stage plan.
  • It has a tough 6.83 km circular walk and the Sûre cycle path to Rosport.

Moersdorf is a waypoint more than a destination, and that's how I'd use it. Walking Route 1 over two days, this is your overnight stop; on a bike, it's the ideal start for a loop along both banks of the Sûre.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Getting there

    End of the first stage

In the Mullerthal Trail's six-stage plan, day one runs from Echternach to Moersdorf, 18.7 km, and day two returns to Echternach, 19.5 km.

A 19 km loop through two countries

Ride the PC3 cycle path from Moersdorf to Rosport beside the Sûre, cross to the German bank there and come back over the Metzdorf bridge. About 19 km in all.

A steep climb with a view

The Auto-Pédestre circuit climbs about 170 m straight away, partly on steps, to a plateau with wide views, then returns via Givenich and the Härebësch woods.

Moersdorf is a small village in the Sûre valley, part of the commune of Rosport-Mompach, with the river in front and Germany on the far bank. There’s no single monument to come for, and there doesn’t need to be. It matters because it sits exactly where the Mullerthal Trail changes stage and where one of the region’s nicest bike loops begins.

A natural overnight on Route 1

Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail, a 36.7 km loop, leaves Echternach and passes Rosport, Moersdorf and Herborn before heading back. In the operator’s six-stage plan, day one ends here after 18.7 km and day two returns to Echternach over 19.5 km, via Herborn and the Haard woods. If you split the Trail that way, Moersdorf is your first night. The Trail website has a page for a luggage transfer service, but it gives no details in plain text, so check with the regional tourist office before you count on it and pack light either way.

Is the village circuit worth it?

If you’re fit, yes. The Moersdorf Auto-Pédestre is 6.83 km, takes about two hours and is rated hard by visitluxembourg. It starts at the church with a climb of around 170 m, partly on steps, up to a plateau with broad views. It then crosses the village of Givenich, open fields and the Härebësch woods before a descent that also needs steady feet. Take water and proper boots.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Echternach before prices climb.

Cycling both banks

The PC3 cycle path follows the Sûre from Moersdorf to Rosport on an easy, flat line. visitluxembourg suggests turning it into a loop of about 19 km by crossing to the German cycle path at Rosport and returning to Moersdorf over the Metzdorf bridge. Rosport’s riverside park has an adventure playground with water games, which makes it a good family outing. Walkers can follow the 8.5 km Déiwelskopp nature trail through orchards, dry stone walls and pasture instead.

I’d ride the loop in the morning and spend the afternoon at the Tudor Museum, which opens from 14:00 to 18:00.

Nearby on Route 1

Route 1 also passes the 14th-century chapel at Girsterklaus, which visitluxembourg rates as Luxembourg’s oldest place of pilgrimage to the Virgin. Near Rosport and Steinheim lie the Gefale Leeën, the fallen rocks, huge dolomite blocks that broke away from the cliffs and now wear moss, lichen and ferns, surrounded by ravine woodland of lime, maple, beech and elm. You reach them on Route 1 or local path R8, 8.7 km long. It’s a damper, more riverine landscape than the sandstone around Berdorf.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Echternach before prices climb.

Getting there

The Moersdorf, Duerf bus stop is in the village, and with free buses you can connect from Luxembourg City or Findel without a car. Drivers can use the Um Kiesel car park, closest to the circuit. On foot, come from Echternach along Route 1 of the Trail.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Echternach and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
