Andorra in April, when the lifts switch off

April is Andorra’s changeover month. It opens with the lifts still turning and ends with the country between seasons, no skiers and no hikers. A lot of people look at it for Easter, but in 2027 that needs rethinking. Here’s what’s open, what closes and how to use a month I think is badly underrated.

Four more days on the pistes

The 2026-27 season at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís is due to finish on Sunday 4 April 2027, snow permitting. Naturland’s cross-country trails and Grandvalira’s Kids Free, which waives the lift pass of one 6-to-11-year-old per paying adult when you book accommodation and at least four ski days, end the same day. If your holiday starts on 1 April, you still get four days on the snow. The whole season is laid out in Andorra ski season.

So when is Easter?

In 2027 it’s in March. Easter Sunday is 28 March, so the long weekend runs from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28, and Easter Monday falls on the 29th. Those dates sit well within the season, usually with good snow, and are covered in Andorra in March. If your children’s Easter holidays run into the first days of April, you catch the last of the season too. If you were hoping for a quiet April, that early Easter is good news.

No need to worry about shops. Shops shut on just four days a year, and none of them falls in April. Good Friday and Easter Monday were working-calendar holidays in 2026, but shops still trade.

Is there snow in April?

High up, yes. According to the tourist board, the high peaks keep their snow until early June, so in April the lakes and cols are still white. On the valley floor, though, the normal mean is 8.8°C (48°F), two degrees up on March, as derived from meteo.ad’s figures for the FEDA station in Escaldes. Think chilly mornings and middays warm enough for lunch on a terrace. With that contrast, routes above 1,700 metres aren’t for April, and I wouldn’t go near them without winter mountain experience.

What to do once the lifts stop

My ideal April has three strands. The first is the thermal water at Caldea spa, in Escaldes-Engordany, which you get to enjoy at a slower pace without the skiers or the summer crowds. The second is shopping, because April has no shop-closing days and closing time is 20:00 on Sundays through Thursdays, pushed back to 21:00 at the end of the week. The third is culture. Andorra la Vella’s Bici Lab switches to its longer hours in April, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with the exhibition «Un negocio sobre ruedas» on until 4 April 2027. And the ONCA, Andorra’s classical orchestra, ends its season in Ordino’s National Auditorium on 24 April 2027.

Bear in mind that several national museums, like the Car Museum or Casa Rull, stay on winter hours through May, shut on Sundays and Mondays.

Walks on the valley floor

For walking in April, stay low and sunny. The tourist board suggests the Rec del Solà, an irrigation channel above Andorra la Vella and Escaldes that gets sun all year, and the short Macarulla trails for children. April has two small seasonal pleasures too. Fishing has been open since mid-March, with a tourist licence you apply for online, and the valley rivers are the place for it while the heights are snowbound. And spring reaches the table, as the tourist board lists bitter chicory and dandelion among the season’s produce. If a borda has a salad with them, it’s the real thing, and more seasonal dishes are in Andorran food. For a short April break without skis, I’d base myself in Escaldes or Andorra la Vella, with everything on foot and the national bus for the rest.

Getting there in April

Andorra has no airport, so the usual route is a flight to Toulouse or Barcelona and then a coach or hire car. If you drive, remember that winter kit remains a legal requirement until 15 May, and a sunny day in the valley guarantees nothing on the Envalira pass at 2,408 metres.
