Andorra in July, the warmest and most festive month

July is when Andorra is complete. The high mountains are at their best, the summer lifts are turning, the Romanesque churches open their doors and each parish throws its festa major. The price is crowds and cars, which a bit of planning handles. This is how the month unfolds.

The warmest month, in numbers

July’s normal mean on the valley floor, 19.4°C (67°F), is the highest of the year, worked out from meteo.ad’s monthly bulletins. The tourist board agrees that July is the warmest month, in a mountain summer it calls short and fairly dry, though afternoon storms are part of the scenery. Up by the lakes and ridges it’s fresher. For a British walker, those numbers mean July is ideal for hiking at 2,000 metres without overheating, though the altitude sun is strong and GOV.UK also flags altitude sickness as a risk in parts of the country.

The festes majors

Almost all of July is a party somewhere. According to the tourist board’s calendar, in 2026 Ordino held its festa major from 3 to 6 July, Canillo from 17 to 20, Escaldes-Engordany from 18 to 26 and Sant Julià de Lòria from 24 to 28, while Andorra la Vella’s began on the 30th and ran to 3 August. There’s one fixed date I love. Every 10 July, for Saint Christopher, patron of drivers, vehicles are blessed in front of Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós, a festival declared of cultural interest.

Churches open, museums daily

Through July and August, Romànic de bat a bat lets you in with a guide at six churches spread over five parishes, Santa Coloma, Sant Climent de Pal, Sant Miquel d’Engolasters, Meritxell, Sant Joan de Caselles and Sant Romà de les Bons. Opening is Tuesday to Friday, morning and afternoon, with a later close on Saturdays and just the morning on Sundays. Booking is on (+376) 839 760. Museums stretch their hours too. Encamp’s Casa Cristo opens daily across July and August, 9:30 to 19:00, and national museums such as Casa de la Vall stay open until 19:00 on weekdays.

Up without the effort

Summer in Andorra happens up high. In 2026 the Funicamp ran from Encamp to Solanelles, at 2,500 metres, between 11 July and 8 September, six hours a day from 10:00, with a €16 return foot passenger ticket. Walking routes and a via ferrata start from the midway station, and at the top a 4x4 bus carries on to the Orri del Cubil. At Grau Roig, summer 2026 brought Friday and Saturday tours of the Encenrera orri, where shepherds once made cheese.

Two summer changes to note. At Ordino Arcalís the road to the Coma del Forat closes to traffic from late June to mid-September, 8:30 to 17:30, and you reach the Tristaina lakes by gondola. And the Canillo Tibetan bridge charges its peak rate, €19 in 2026 from 18 July to 13 September, and it runs evening walks across it twice a week in high summer.

Traffic, the big catch

For July 2026 Andorra’s traffic authority, Mobilitat, forecast around 390,000 vehicles, 255,000 of them through the Spanish border, and ran a double lane there all summer. Peak times for entering from Spain were 10:00 to 14:30, and for leaving 16:00 to 20:00. If you’re driving up from Barcelona or Toulouse, arrive early or after lunch, and check Andorra road conditions before you set off.

My July

I’d go in the first fortnight, based in Ordino or La Massana, with two days of lakes, one on the Funicamp, a morning of churches and an afternoon of shopping in the sales, which in 2026 ran from 19 June to 30 August. On a clear night, stargazing at the Coll de la Botella, which the tourist board offers from July to September. Flying in, Toulouse and Barcelona are the gateways, as Andorra has no airport, and on a coach the border queue becomes someone else’s problem.
