Nagol, two Romanesque churches and a winery above Sant Julià

Nagol is a handful of houses on the slope that looks across at Sant Julià de Lòria from the east, and it squeezes two of the most interesting Romanesque churches in southern Andorra into a very small patch of hillside. You can drive up the Nagol road, which leaves the centre by the tourist office, or walk up on two waymarked paths.

Sant Serni, the reason most people come

The bigger church is Sant Serni de Nagol, consecrated in 1055 and known for wall paintings uncovered in 1978. Its terrace commands the whole valley. Its interior, autumn opening hours and how to fit it into your day are covered on its own page; here the focus is on what surrounds it.

Sant Martí, hanging from the rock

The chapel of Sant Martí de Nagol is tiny and reached on a footpath from the hamlet. Andorra Turisme cites its first mention in a document of 1048 and lists it as a protected monument. What makes it odd is where it sits, wedged into the crag on its north side with a vertical drop to the valley on the south. That’s why the apse faces west and the door east, the opposite of the normal arrangement.

It had fallen into ruin, and in 1981 the heritage service began rebuilding it. Two digs came first, recovering part of the original altar and turning up pottery, coins and a burial ground. For me it’s the most photogenic chapel in the parish, precisely because it takes up so little space.

Walking up from town

There are two official paths, both graded moderate with 223 m of ascent. The Alins stream path leaves the northern end of Sant Julià, zigzags up alongside the stream and runs to 5.1 km; the first stretch is cobbled, with walls separating it from the fields. The Sant Martí path, 4.6 km, climbs the Sant Serni track and continues to the chapel across a hillside with cobbled and dry-stone sections.

A winery in the hamlet

Nagol is home to Casa Beal, the Visa-Tor family winery that Andorra Turisme credits with reviving Andorran wine. It started in 1988 and launched Cim de Cel in 2006. You need to book at least three days ahead, and visits run from an hour and a half to three hours. The other wineries are in Andorran wine.

When to go

Sant Serni stands at 1,145 m, according to the Comú, well below the 1,700 m band that Andorra Turisme recommends saving for summer, so the Nagol paths are walkable for most of the year. If you can pick your date, on 24 October 2026 at midday the government runs a free guided visit to Sant Serni on the church’s seven curiosities, finished off with hot chocolate.
