Hotels in Soldeu, at the heart of Grandvalira

Some mountain villages have a ski resort next door. Others are the ski resort. Soldeu is the second kind. It belongs to the parish of Canillo, but in winter it works as the hub of Grandvalira, and that’s what you’re paying for when you book here, the chance to click into your skis a few minutes after breakfast.

The heart of a 215 km ski area

Grandvalira describes its Soldeu sector as strategically placed in the centre of the resort, with wide pistes and steep descents. From here the rest of a 215 km ski area is within reach, and with the right hotel you won’t need the car all week. For me that’s the main reason to choose Soldeu over any other village.

The resort also calls Soldeu ideal for families and says it has a wide, high-quality choice of hotels, with four and five-star properties at the foot of the slopes. I haven’t found an official register listing how many there are or each one’s rating, so I won’t invent a figure. What I will say is that here, location matters more than stars.

How do I choose a hotel in Soldeu?

In its summer 2025 blog, Grandvalira Resorts suggests the Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa as a characterful stay, the Park Piolets MountainHotel & Spa for families and the Hotel Naudi Boutique for adults only. That’s the resort promoting its partners and I read it as such, but it shows the range.

My rule is simple. Ask the hotel for the real walking time to the lift and where the ski room is. Five minutes in ski boots, twice a day for six days, adds up. With small children, ask about the nearest ski school meeting point and children’s area as well. If you’re booking Soldeu as a package, check that the transfer from Toulouse or Barcelona is included and how long it takes. Coming from France by car, you enter through Pas de la Casa, the first sector from the French side, and cross the Envalira pass or tunnel. In the snowy months, Andorran law requires winter tyres or chains.

Parking and getting around

If you drive, Grandvalira has two paid, covered car parks in Soldeu, Basers with 285 spaces and Avet with 388. Show an adult or senior Andorra Pass you’ve skied on that day and paid parking in Soldeu, El Tarter or Canillo costs half, from 8:00 to 20:00. Before booking, I’d ask whether the hotel has its own spaces, because that changes the final bill more than anything. Driving an electric car? Grandvalira lists two FEDA charging points in the Basers car park and seven in Avet, which is worth knowing if your hotel has none of its own. The resort’s GreenCharging app shows which are free.

Without a car, take the L3 from the capital; Soldeu is the end of the line, with a stop in Canillo on the way. Within the resort, the free Ski Bus links the sectors.

Après-ski and the World Cup

Grandvalira says Soldeu has a large choice of bars and nightspots for après-ski. If you’d rather have peace by eleven at night, look at hotels in El Tarter, with the same slopes on the doorstep and a slightly calmer feel.

The Avet run is Soldeu’s other claim to fame. It was the stage for the 2019 and 2023 Finals, and on the first weekend of March 2027, the 6th and 7th, it stages the women’s giant slalom and slalom, the seventh time Andorra has welcomed the World Cup according to Grandvalira. Beginners and the off-season

Soldeu is also home to Ski Canaro, a small area with two beginner slopes and a sledging run, in the parish of Canillo according to its operator, which hasn’t yet published its 2026-27 opening date. It’s a gentle start for first-timers.

Outside winter, Soldeu has the Grandvalira golf course and valley walks, but it’s not where I’d spend a week in July. In summer I prefer places with a year-round life of their own, which I explain in where to stay in Andorra.
