Where is Andorra, and what's around it?

Plenty of people in Britain know the name Andorra from ski brochures and duty-free stories without ever quite placing it. That’s fair enough, because it turns up in holiday adverts far more often than on maps. The short answer is that it’s in the Pyrenees, between Spain and France. The longer answer, the one that’s useful when you’re booking, is about what surrounds it, how you get in and what’s close by.

At the heart of the eastern Pyrenees

The tourist board puts it neatly, Andorra lies in south-west Europe at the heart of the eastern Pyrenees. It’s a mountain country of 468 km² with an average altitude of 1,996 m, and that shapes everything from the weather to the roads. To the south it borders Spain, specifically Catalonia, along 63.7 km. To the north lies France, with 56.6 km of frontier split between two départements. That’s it, two neighbours and no more. The lowest point in the country, 840 m, sits right on the southern border, where the River Runer meets the Valira.

Is Andorra part of Spain?

No, and that’s the most common mix-up. Andorra is an independent state that adopted a written constitution in 1993 and took its seat at the UN the same year. It shares Catalan with its southern neighbour, since that’s its only official language, and has a large Spanish community, 21,197 residents on 31 August 2026. But it isn’t part of Spain. Nor is it French, even though one of its two heads of state is the President of France. That role came down from the Count of Foix, passed to the French king and then, with the Republic, to the president.

In Europe, but outside the EU

Andorra is in Europe and in some of its institutions. The Spanish foreign ministry lists it as a member of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the Francophonie since 2004. What it isn’t, and this catches people out, is a member of the European Union or Schengen. It uses the euro under a 2011 monetary agreement and has had a customs union with the EU since 1990, but there are checks and allowances when you leave. The details are in is Andorra in the EU.

What’s near Andorra?

On the Spanish side, La Seu d’Urgell, capital of the Alt Urgell district in the province of Lleida. The N-145 runs through it, and it’s home to Andorra-La Seu airport, a short hop of 7.8 km from the town; the airport’s own figures put the Andorran customs post 17.4 km away. Its 2026-27 flights haven’t been confirmed, as its website hasn’t been updated since 2024.

On the French side, trains from Toulouse run to L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre, which the tourist board places some eleven road kilometres short of the border. What being up here means in practice

Living high in the Pyrenees has consequences for visitors. First, you can only arrive by road. Second, for more than half the year, from November to mid-May, the tourist board and the Foreign Office both require snow chains or winter tyres. Third, because Andorra is outside the EU, the Foreign Office says your GHIC won’t cover you, so travel insurance is essential.
