La Cortinada, the Ordino village with the most to see

If you only have time for one village in the Ordino valley, make it La Cortinada. Round a single bend of the road you get a painted Romanesque church, a mill that was grinding flour into the 1960s and one of the oldest houses in the country. Andorra’s tourist board likes it best under snow, with smoke rising from the chimneys, and I can see why.

Finding La Cortinada

La Cortinada belongs to Ordino and has a quarter named after it. You’ll find it on the CG-3 between Ansalonga and Arans, where the valley starts to narrow. National bus L6 climbs from Andorra la Vella, stops in Ordino village and ends here, so a car is optional.

Three visits within a few minutes’ walk

Start with Sant Martí de la Cortinada, a twelfth-century Romanesque church enlarged in the Baroque period. Its walls keep part of the original murals by an unnamed painter known as the Master of La Cortinada, and its seventeenth-century woodwork is, to my eye, as good a reason to go in as the murals. It opens in July and August, free of charge.

Right opposite, by the river, is the old flour mill and sawmill, known in Catalan as la mola i la serradora. They’re over four centuries old, ran on river power until the 1960s and now open in summer with a working demonstration; in 2026 an adult ticket was €5.75.

Across the road, on carrer de Pal, is Cal Pal, the house that gives the whole group its name. It has more than six centuries of records behind it, a white dovecote you’ll spot from the road and, since 2018, exhibitions on Andorran identity for €3.

When is the best time to visit?

The calendar matters more here than anywhere else in the parish. In July and August everything opens, and Cal Pal goes from weekends only to Tuesday to Sunday. The rest of the year the church and the mill are shut and you see the village from outside, which is still pleasant. In spring or autumn I’d pair it with the Areny-Plandolit family museum down in Ordino, which opens year-round.

Walking from La Cortinada

The old royal road from Santa Bàrbara in Ordino runs through El Vilar and into La Cortinada before heading on to Llorts. From here it becomes the iron route, which the tourist board reckons at an hour and a half to Llorts. It’s an easy, shaded walk, and for me the best way to understand why this valley lived off iron for three centuries.

If you want to wake up here rather than in the capital, the council’s accommodation list puts a four-star spa hotel, a three-star, several holiday flats and the Cal Batlle rural guesthouse in La Cortinada. For a quiet summer base with buses, I think it beats the busier villages lower down.
