New Year's Eve in Andorra, and how to plan it around the slopes

Some people want a big square and a countdown; others want pistes. Andorra is firmly the second kind. New Year’s Eve here is a night of hotel, restaurant and mountains with the lifts running at full tilt, and it pays to know in advance what you can’t do so the trip goes smoothly.

How the week falls

In 2026, 31 December is a Thursday and 1 January 2027 a Friday. That gives you a natural long weekend to Sunday 3rd, and in my view the best formula is three nights, the 30th to the 2nd. On the 31st shops open standard hours, until 8pm from Sunday to Thursday, though each can adjust its hours that afternoon. On New Year’s Day, by contrast, not one shop opens anywhere in Andorra, and Grandvalira’s sales stand stays shut as well.

The weather

In the valley the normal average slips from 3.7 °C in December to 3.1 °C in January, the two coldest months at the FEDA station. At night, and higher up, it’s a good deal colder. If you’re going out for dinner, pack a proper coat and footwear with grip on snow. And if you’re staying in Pas de la Casa, remember that getting down to the valley means crossing the Port d’Envalira, so I wouldn’t book dinner in Andorra la Vella with a drive back in the small hours.

For British visitors, one more practical point. Most people fly into Barcelona or Toulouse, and New Year falls in the busiest week of the ski season, so I’d leave generous margins between the coach and the flight home.

Skiing on the 31st and the 1st

The 2026-27 season has been running since 4 December at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, lifts 9am to 5pm. A morning on the slopes on the 31st is a great plan and leaves the afternoon free to rest before dinner. Over the festive fortnight, though, big groups pay full price at Grandvalira, and day passes rise and fall with demand. I’d buy online in advance, where the resort promises savings of up to 15 %; the detail is in Andorra ski pass.

The night itself, sensibly

One rule to be clear about. GOV.UK’s travel advice points out that drinking alcohol in public is illegal in Andorra, so keep the midnight toast indoors. As of 29 September 2026 there was also no official public party announced for that night. Nightlife is spread between Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany and Pas de la Casa, covered in Andorra nightlife.

If you prefer the slope-side atmosphere, L’Abarset, the après-ski bar in the El Tarter car park, opens in season from Sunday to Friday from 4pm to 9pm and on Saturdays from 4pm to 10pm, according to Grandvalira. It’s a plan for the afternoon of the 31st, before dinner, rather than for midnight itself.

For dinner my advice is simple. Book weeks ahead in your own hotel or somewhere within walking distance, and leave the car where it is. Mountain roads with ice, where chains have been compulsory since 1 November, are no place to be heading home at 2am. If you need help, dial 112 for emergencies and 116 for a medical emergency, and remember the GHIC doesn’t apply here, so your travel insurance does the work.

Package or independent?

In such a busy week, booking hotel and lift pass together can simplify the logistics a lot; the options are in Andorra ski holidays. Add the tourist tax to your budget, €1 to €3 per person per night depending on category, from age 16 and up to seven nights, plus 4.5 % IGI.

Coming by coach from Barcelona, bear in mind Andorra Direct Bus warns that its timetable may change on 31 December and 1 January. I wouldn’t book a flight home on the 1st without checking the coach first.

New Year’s Day

With the shops shut, the 1st is a day for the snow, a walk or doing nothing at all. The winter sales start at the end of December, so shopping works better on the 30th or the 2nd.
