Petrol in Andorra, what you can take out and how to save

Filling the tank before leaving Andorra is almost a tradition, and plenty of British drivers heading back through Spain or France do the same. I’m not going to quote a price per litre, since nothing official lists one, and a number lifted from a forum isn’t something I’d pass on. What does have a source is how much you can take out tax-free, the one discount going, and where to charge an electric car.

How much fuel can you take out?

The Spanish Tax Agency is precise. Among the allowances for travellers entering Spain from Andorra is fuel, exempt up to the contents of the vehicle’s normal tank plus a portable container of no more than 10 litres. That sits apart from the €900 limit on other purchases, so fuel doesn’t eat into it.

What’s outside the rule is the extra jerrycan. Carry several and anything beyond those 10 litres is no longer exempt, and customs can ask you to declare and pay. The other limits, from cigarettes to perfume, plus the British allowances for the flight home, are gathered in Andorra duty free allowance.

If you leave via Pas de la Casa into France, I haven’t found an official French source setting out the fuel rule, so I’d treat the Spanish figure as a sensible guide rather than a guarantee.

Is petrol cheaper in Andorra?

Everyone asks it, and it’s the one I can’t answer with a number. The government doesn’t publish an average price, the tourist board doesn’t either, and the comparisons doing the rounds come from individuals and date quickly. The honest advice is to look at the pump on the day.

Timing is where you can be clever. The allowance is measured by what fits in the tank, so it makes sense to arrive with it low and fill at the end. If you’re skiing, the passes and resort roads use more fuel than you’d think, and filling up on day one simply hands some of that margin back.

The 3% ski pass discount

Among the perks of a 2026-27 day pass, Grandvalira Resorts lists a 3% saving when you fill up at Moeve, dyneff or Meroil in Andorra. All you do is show a valid day or multi-day pass. It won’t change your life, but on a full tank it adds up and costs nothing to ask for. Pass types and prices are in Andorra ski pass.

Driving an electric car

The tourist board keeps a list of charging points across the country, from hotels to council car parks in Encamp, Ordino and La Cortinada and the areas around the ski resorts, from El Tarter and Canillo to Grau Roig and the Arcalís sector. Grandvalira says it has 50 chargers across its car parks, so you can charge while you ski, and the national electricity company FEDA keeps adding more.

What happens if you carry too much

The Spanish Tax Agency explains what happens when goods exceed the allowance on entering Spain, and fuel is no exception. At customs you can pay the taxes due on the excess, leave it in the customs warehouse, or take it back to where it came from. It’s handled with a form called a «talón para declaración verbal», stamped by the officer according to your choice and shown again as you leave the customs area.

None of those options is worth it for a few litres of petrol, and the queue at the customs office on a busy afternoon would cost you more in time than you’d ever save at the pump. I’d keep the can at 10 litres and reach the border with nothing to explain.

How I’d plan it

Heading back through Spain, I’d fill up the evening before or on the way down to Sant Julià, with the tank nearly empty and the ski pass in my pocket in case the station is one of the three brands. Heading into France, I’d fill in Pas de la Casa before tackling the pass. In winter I’d still keep a healthy reserve for the drive itself, because the government’s winter manual warns that heavy snow can leave you stationary for a long time.
