Hotels in El Tarter, Grandvalira's freestyle village

El Tarter sits in Soldeu’s shadow. Its neighbour gets the fame, and plenty of people book Soldeu without looking any further. I think that’s a mistake. El Tarter has the same ski area on its doorstep, a couple of things Soldeu lacks, and a feel that suits some travellers better.

Where it is and why it’s different

El Tarter is a village in the parish of Canillo, in the Valira d’Orient valley, halfway between Canillo and Soldeu. The parish’s own Tibetan bridge website lists it by its full name, Sant Pere del Tarter. Grandvalira calls it one of its most dynamic sectors, and two names explain why.

The first is the El Tarter snow park, which the resort credits with the longest run of jumps and rails anywhere in the Pyrenees, and a high European ranking too. The second is the Àliga run, approved as a FIS downhill course in 2013, first used for a World Cup race in 2016 and, with Soldeu’s Avet, the stage for the 2019 and 2023 World Cup Finals. If you ride a board or like freestyle, your playground starts outside the hotel door. Grandvalira’s events calendar also includes freestyle contests here, such as a banked slalom and a big air, so check the dates if you’d like to watch, or to dodge the crowds.

Who is El Tarter for?

Three kinds of visitor, in my view. Riders, with the snow park close by. Skiing families, who get the Bababoom Circus children’s circuit and the same Grandvalira access as Soldeu. And anyone driving, because El Tarter has something Soldeu doesn’t.

That something is the Àliga car park, with 350 free outdoor spaces according to Grandvalira. If your hotel has no garage, leaving the car for free by the slopes is a genuine saving. The sector’s paid car parks also qualify for the 50% Andorra Pass discount, from 8:00 to 20:00, and the car park has 11 double FEDA charging points for electric cars.

For named hotels, Grandvalira suggests the Hotel Nordic for families, and the Tarter Mountain Suites also appears in its summer list. Neither shows up with stars in any official register I’ve seen, so I won’t guess. What I’d ask any of them is the real walk to the lift, because that shapes your whole day.

Evenings in El Tarter

Calmer than Soldeu doesn’t mean early to bed. Grandvalira says El Tarter’s late afternoons are among the liveliest in the ski area, centred on the stage terrace at L’Abarset with its concerts and parties. If you want total quiet, ask for a room that doesn’t face the slopes. The options at each resort are in après-ski in Andorra.

Getting there without a car

From the UK, the usual route is a flight into Toulouse or Barcelona, then the airport coach to Andorra la Vella. From there, national bus L3, Andorra la Vella to Soldeu, runs along the valley’s main road and costs no more than €4.80. On the slopes, Grandvalira’s free Ski Bus links the sectors. If you drive in winter, make sure the hire company has fitted winter tyres or supplied chains, since the law requires them until mid-May.

By motorhome

El Tarter is one of the few places in Grandvalira with an overnight area that has services. In winter, the Prat de la Costa car park has 30 bays with toilets, a waste-water point and recycling, with open access from 08:00 to 12:00 and by phone after that. El Tarter in summer

In summer the main draw is next door. Incles, the glacial valley that branches off between this village and Soldeu, bans cars from mid-June to early September and you ride an electric train to its head, where paths lead to the Juclar and Cabana Sorda lakes.
