Ski hire in Andorra without losing your first morning

Flying to Andorra with your own skis rarely makes sense for a week’s holiday if you don’t use them the rest of the year. Hire is everywhere, from resort shops to the ground floors of hotels in Soldeu and Pas de la Casa. What makes the difference is where and when you do it, because the wrong choice puts you in the 9am queue on your first morning.

Where to hire

Each resort has its own service. Grandvalira hires from shops across its sectors, with a basic range for beginners and a mid-range for improvers, and according to its website full kit can be booked in its online shop from €26. Pal Arinsal points you to the shops in La Massana, Arinsal and Pal, which will advise on what suits your level. Ordino Arcalís runs two shops of its own, in the Hortell and Planells buildings, with standard and premium kit, snowshoes and accessories, and takes card only.

On top of that, Andorra’s tourist board publishes a list of 45 hire shops by parish. Encamp has 18, most of them in Pas de la Casa, plus Grau Roig and Encamp village near the Funicamp. La Massana has 13, spread across the centre, Arinsal, Erts and Anyós, with one on the slopes at Comallemple. Canillo has 12, in El Tarter, Soldeu, Canillo and Incles, several inside gondola buildings and hotels. The list shows one in Ordino parish, at Sornàs, and one in Escaldes-Engordany. Andorra la Vella has none.

How much does it cost?

The only shared official figure is Grandvalira’s, full kit from €26 booked online. Village shops set their own prices and no official source brings them together, so I won’t quote more. What I’d do is check the resort’s online price and compare it with the shop at your hotel or round the corner before deciding. Over a week, the difference can pay for a dinner.

When and how to hire

Grandvalira advises sorting out equipment in advance in high season to be sure of availability, and I’d go further. Hire the afternoon before your first day, in the village where you’re staying, and leave your skis at the shop or in a resort locker if your hotel has no ski room. That way your first morning is just boots on and off you go.

If you’re skiing with children, ask about the Magnestick at Ordino Arcalís, a magnetic vest for kids that locks them onto certain chairlifts and lets go when they reach the top. And remember ski schools don’t include equipment in lesson prices, as I explain in ski lessons in Andorra.

Cross-country, snowboards and snowshoes

The same applies to snowboards, with all three resorts and most shops hiring beginner and intermediate boards. For cross-country skiing, the place is Naturland at La Rabassa, which hires classic and skating skis, boots, poles and snowshoes from age 5, with standard kit in its packages and a better range for a supplement. Bring your own, or hire?

Driving down from France or across from Spain with your own kit costs nothing and saves a week’s hire. In that case the only extra I’d pay for is a ski locker, since Grandvalira offers lockers at the slopes and you avoid carrying everything back and forth each day. Flying from the UK is a different sum, and for a one-week trip I rarely think checking in skis pays off.

Where to stay for easy hire

Pas de la Casa has the most shops on the official list and you ski out of town. Soldeu and El Tarter have hire inside the gondola buildings and ski-in hotels. La Massana, next to the Pal gondola. If you’re staying in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes, hire in Encamp at the foot of the Funicamp and ride straight up.

My take

I wouldn’t pay to fly my own skis out for a week in Andorra. For Christmas or half-term I’d book the resort’s kit online before leaving home, and the rest of the winter I’d hire from the shop in my village the afternoon before, which is where you get the best advice on length and level. If your package includes hire, check which shop it uses and whether it’s near your hotel, because a long walk in ski boots every morning gets old fast.
