Andorra in spring, the season hardly anyone picks

Spring is the season fewest people choose for Andorra, which is precisely what makes it worth a look to me. It begins with the ski season in full swing and ends with green valleys and café tables outside, while the high mountains stay white. It’s the time to see the country at its own pace, without ski queues or August traffic. What it isn’t, yet, is lake season.

Three months that don’t match

Andorra’s spring changes so much from one month to the next that it’s best taken in parts. March is still winter on the pistes, with the season’s full snow base, the Soldeu World Cup and, in 2027, Easter. April is the hinge, with the resorts closing on the 4th and the country between seasons. May already feels like summer on the valley floor, with zip lines, guided walks and the first big feast of the calendar, the Canòlich pilgrimage.

In short, March is for skiing, April for resting and May for walking low down. Each month has its own guide with dates and openings, in Andorra in March, Andorra in April and Andorra in May.

Spring weather

Down in the valley the normal mean climbs from 6.8°C (44°F) in March to 8.8°C (48°F) in April and 12.4°C (54°F) in May. That’s almost six degrees in three months, the fastest rise of the year. But Andorra is a vertical country. The tourist board notes that the snow reaching the high mountains around November stays until early June, so in spring two climates sit a few kilometres apart. On a sunny day you can have lunch on a terrace in Andorra la Vella while snow still rules at 2,500 metres.

The practical consequence is on the road. Winter driving kit is compulsory until 15 May, which covers most of spring.

What opens and what closes

The big closure is the pistes, planned for 4 April 2027 at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, the same day Naturland’s cross-country trails finish. Until then, the second half of March has Grandvalira’s Kids Free, the winter’s strongest offer for families. For British families, Easter 2027 falls neatly inside that window.

The openings come in May. The tourist board puts the start of the Ordino zip-line park, the Bosc Aventura at Engolasters and the guided walks in the Madriu valley in that month. Fishing opens earlier, in mid-March, while the Incles valley train and the resorts’ summer parks wait for June.

Is spring worth it?

It depends on what you want, but I think it’s the most underrated season. It offers three things no other does. Calm, because between the lifts closing and summer the country slows down and Caldea spa or the shopping streets are pleasant rather than packed. A landscape in transition, with green meadows below, rivers full of snowmelt and white summits. And village life returning, with the Cortals of Encamp, groups of stone bordas where families spent the warm months, and a calendar of local feasts that stirs in May.

There are cultural touches too. La Massana has held its comic fair every spring since 1997, and the Madriu visitor centre in Escaldes-Engordany switches to longer hours from Easter. National museums, though, don’t open on Sundays or Mondays until their June timetable starts.

What I’d do in spring

For a first visit, I’d pick May, when the valley is green, the terraces are out and the adventure parks have reopened, while the crowds of summer are still weeks away. A base in a valley village, a guided day in the Madriu, a second for the zip lines or a medium hike, and afternoons for Caldea and shopping. For walking, stay low and sunny, as on the irrigation channels around Andorra la Vella, which you’ll find in easy walks in Andorra. Outside the ski season it’s easy to reach, flying to Toulouse or Barcelona and continuing by coach. On the plate, spring brings bitter chicory and dandelion, and around Carnival you’ll still find the conger escudella of Lent.

What I wouldn’t do is plan lakes like Tristaina or Pessons before late June. That’s when the tourist board starts recommending anything above 1,700 metres, and rightly so. And whatever the season, travel insurance matters here, because a GHIC doesn’t apply. If open mountains are what you’re after, wait for Andorra in summer. In May, Encamp also runs the Travessa d’Encamp, which the parish council bills as the oldest race in the country.
