Toulouse to Andorra, the British skier's shortcut

Most people assume Barcelona is the way into Andorra, but for a British visitor Toulouse is often the neater option. It’s 185 km to Andorra la Vella against Barcelona’s 208, the coach picks up at the airport, and skiers heading for Grandvalira’s eastern end arrive right by the lifts. Here’s how I’d use it.

Why Toulouse works from the UK

Blagnac’s website has a page for each destination, and the British ones it marks as direct are London (Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted), Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Services like these can be seasonal, so check what’s flying on your dates before you commit. Once you land, you’re 185 km from the Andorran capital, and even closer to Pas de la Casa, the first place you reach over the border.

Drivers coming from France use the N-20, the N-22 or the N-320, the road that crosses the Puymorens pass or tunnels beneath it. Andorra shares 56.6 km of border with France and 63.7 km with Spain, and both crossings are open 24 hours. You land in the Schengen area in France, leave it when you enter Andorra and re-enter it on the way back, so the UK government asks that your passport meets Schengen rules, and Spain’s foreign ministry notes that the Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors when they come back out of Andorra.

The coach from the airport

Andorra by Bus is the operator with a published fare. It leaves Matabiau bus station, bay 15, four times a day, at quarter to ten in the morning, then 13:45, 17:45 and 21:45, and picks up at the airport half an hour later, in arrivals, Hall B, in front of door B. The run to Andorra takes four hours from the city centre, or roughly three and a half from Blagnac.

The fare is €36 one way and €64 return, valid for web bookings. Heading home, coaches leave Andorra at 04:00, 08:00, 12:00 and 16:00 and reach Toulouse airport three and a half hours later. The 04:00 is rough, but it’s the one that saves an early morning flight.

Hiring a car at Blagnac

For a ski week this is what I’d weigh most seriously. You’re at the lifts in Pas de la Casa or Grau Roig without crossing the whole country, and you can carry boots and skis without thinking twice. If your hotel is down in Andorra la Vella, though, you’ll cross Andorra from one end to the other on mountain roads.

A UK photocard licence is fine for Andorra, and you should check your rental agreement allows the trip out of France. Snow chains or winter tyres are the law from the start of November until mid-May, and a big snowfall can shut the road for a few hours. By train to L’Hospitalet

The railway gets closest to Andorra at L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre, a French station some eleven kilometres by road from the border and served from Toulouse. Hife runs a scheduled coach from L’Hospitalet and Ax-les-Thermes to Pas de la Casa, Soldeu, Canillo, Encamp and Andorra la Vella, twice a day in each direction and timed to SNCF trains. Toulouse or Barcelona?

I’d lean towards Toulouse for skiing on the eastern side of Grandvalira and towards Barcelona if you want the most coach departures or plan to stay in the capital. The fares are close, €36 from Toulouse against €33 from Barcelona airport with the same operator. Flight times and prices from your nearest UK airport will usually settle it, and the options side by side are in flights to Andorra.

Customs on the way back into France

France is in the EU and Andorra isn’t, so there’s customs on your way out. Allowances are per person and can’t be pooled, and the UK government says French and Spanish officers come down hard on Andorran cigarettes, impounding what’s over the limit and potentially the vehicle carrying it.
