A weekend in Andorra, one day in the valleys and one in the capital

Two days is the right length to understand Andorra the first time. There’s time to see it’s more than a shopping street, to drive up a valley, eat in a borda and finish in hot water, without feeling rushed. My plan is simple, a mountain day and a capital day, with one bed in Escaldes-Engordany.

Where to stay and which way round

I’d stay in Escaldes, which puts Caldea and the shops on foot and the Canillo valley half an hour away by car. If you arrive on Friday evening, you can start early on Saturday without changing hotel. On top of the room comes a nightly tourist tax of €1, €1.50, €2 or €3 a head for anyone 16 or over, depending on the hotel’s category, plus 4.5% IGI.

Which day goes first depends on the month. From October to May the Casa de la Vall shuts on Sundays and Mondays, so on those weekends the capital goes on Saturday and the valley on Sunday. From June to September it opens on Sunday mornings, and you can follow the order below.

Saturday in the Canillo valley

At 9:30 I’d be at Meritxell Sanctuary, which is open every day of the week. It’s Ricardo Bofill’s modern building, home to the country’s patron saint, with the old church preserved beside it. From there, drive to the Roc del Quer viewpoint, where €6 buys you a glass-floored walkway with 12 of its 20 m hanging over the Montaup valley. Bear in mind you can only get there by private vehicle.

If you’d rather test your nerves, the Canillo Tibetan bridge is the alternative, 603 m long and 158 m high, for €17, reachable only on the official bus from the village, which you board half an hour before your slot. I’d do one or the other, not both, so the day can breathe.

For lunch, a borda. These old stone farm buildings, turned into restaurants, are the most Andorran way to sit down to a meal on a valley day, and I’ve gathered them in borda restaurants in Andorra.

What to do on Saturday afternoon?

With the afternoon free, Sant Joan de Caselles, just outside Canillo on the road to France, is an 11th and 12th-century Romanesque church with a Lombard bell tower and a 16th-century altarpiece. You can only go inside from 15 June to 15 September; outside those dates, the exterior alone is worth the stop. On the way back to Escaldes I’d drive up to Engolasters lake, which has a road and a path round it, to watch the light fade.

On Saturdays the shops stay open until 21:00, so there’s still time for a wander along Avinguda Carlemany before dinner. The shops shut on just four fixed dates a year, so Sunday here is a normal trading day.

Sunday, the capital on foot and Caldea

Sunday I’d do without the car. At 10:00, the old quarter, paying €5 for the Casa de la Vall and nothing for Sant Esteve, then Avinguda Meritxell, where shops open until 20:00 on Sundays too. To finish, Caldea early in the afternoon, with its three-hour ticket, before the drive or the coach home.

What if you haven’t got a car?

It works, with caveats. Most British visitors fly into Barcelona or Toulouse, and Andorra by Bus runs from El Prat for €33 one way and €56 return, and from Toulouse for €36 and €64, according to its website in September 2026. Within the country, the national bus L3 links Andorra la Vella with Canillo and Soldeu, but there’s no Sunday service and a long lunchtime break on Saturdays, so the valley day goes on Saturday with the timetable in hand. The Tibetan bridge works well this way, since its bus leaves from Canillo itself; the Roc del Quer, however, is out without a car.

In winter, Saturday is for skiing

If there’s snow, the plan barely changes. Saturday becomes a ski day, with Grandvalira close at hand from Canillo or Encamp, and Sunday stays the same, capital and Caldea for tired legs. In that case I’d sleep closer to the slopes and compare Andorra ski holidays packages with booking hotel and pass separately.
