The Valira tumbling between the buildings of Escaldes-Engordany, flowers lining the railings

Espai Caldes is the Escaldes-Engordany council's cultural centre, on the bank of the Valira between the Tosca and Engordany bridges, both medieval in origin. It's a straight-lined glass and iron building whose 400 m² and more make it one of Andorra's largest exhibition spaces, with an indoor glass viewpoint jutting out over the river.

I'd go in even if the current show didn't appeal, just for the viewpoint over the Valira. And I'd do it on the same walk as the two bridges, because that's exactly where the contrast between old and new Escaldes shows best.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

A glass viewpoint over the river

Inside there's a glazed viewpoint jutting out over the Valira, looking onto the natural setting of upper Escaldes.

  2. 02 Getting there

    Between Tosca and Engordany

It sits between the Tosca and Engordany bridges, both medieval in origin, so you see all three on the same stroll.

    Check the programme first

It mixes contemporary art shows with cultural and leisure events, so what you find depends on the council's programme.

    Andorra events

In upper Escaldes, where the Valira runs between two medieval bridges, there’s a building that seems to have slipped into the postcard. Espai Caldes is glass and iron, all straight lines, and its design deliberately plays today’s architecture off against the old. That clash of styles is what I like most here.

One of the country’s largest halls

It’s the cultural centre of the Escaldes-Engordany council. Its 400 m² and more put it among Andorra’s largest exhibition spaces, with room for large structures and big works. It mixes contemporary art shows with cultural and leisure events, so a visit varies a lot depending on what’s programmed.

The viewpoint over the Valira

What doesn’t change is the viewpoint. Inside there’s a glass viewpoint jutting out over the river, looking onto the setting of the parish’s upper end. The space is adapted for people with reduced mobility.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Espai Caldes and pick one that fits your day.

Fitting it in

I’d see it on the same walk as the Tosca and Engordany bridges, both covered in Andorra’s medieval bridges, and link it with the Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre on the same avenue. To find out what’s on, email [email protected] beforehand or ask at the Plaça Santa Anna tourist office.

Getting there

The gallery sits at the very top of the avenue, a short walk from anywhere in Escaldes. From the capital or from Sant Julià, you can ride the L1 or the Bus Exprés, plus the night bus after dark. By car, it’s easiest to use one of the car parks nearby, because the avenue is pedestrianised; the public car park in the Caldea building never closes.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Andorra la Vella before you arrive rather than at the desk.

What’s nearby

Everything worth seeing in old Escaldes is a stroll away. The two medieval bridges cross the river a few metres from the gallery, Caldea is a few minutes on foot, and the tourist office is on Plaça Santa Anna. With half a day to spare, the most used entrance to the Madriu valley, the country’s only World Heritage Site, also starts in Escaldes.

Who would I send here?

Mainly anyone already in Escaldes for the thermal water or the shops who wants a different half hour, especially if a large-format show is on, which is what a hall this size was designed for. If you’ve come to Andorra only for the mountains, it won’t change your trip. And since the programme varies, it’s worth emailing the council first so you don’t turn up between two shows to an empty room. I’d allow half an hour, viewpoint included, and pair it with a coffee in upper Escaldes. On a grey afternoon, watching the river from behind the glass is a pleasure in itself. It’s an easy add-on to any Caldea day. It’s fully accessible for wheelchair users, and the glass viewpoint is part of the visit for everyone, whatever the exhibition. For me, it is the most surprising modern building in the parish.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Andorra la Vella from where you are.
