Cheap hotels in Andorra without ending up miles from anything

A confession first. No official source in Andorra publishes hotel prices or a list of the cheapest places to stay, and I’m not going to make one up. What I can give you is the way I’d go about paying less, built on the numbers that are public and that matter more than most people realise.

The calendar moves the price most

Forget the star rating for a moment. The single biggest factor is when you go. Grandvalira, which runs the resorts, says Andorra’s busiest months are December, January, February and March, all down to skiing. This winter the lifts start turning on Friday 4 December and stop on Sunday 4 April, and within that window I would expect Christmas and the February half-term weeks to leave the least room for a bargain.

If you’re not coming to ski, I’d book spring, summer or autumn. July and August bring lakes, walking routes, Caldea and the shops, with none of the winter pressure on mountain hotels. If you are skiing, book early and play with midweek dates before you start trading down on quality.

How much does the tax change with the stars?

Here there are official figures. Since July 2022 every regulated stay charges a tax per person per night from age 16, capped at seven nights, with 4.5% IGI on top. It’s €3 in a five-star, €2 in a four-star or a registered tourist flat, €1.50 in a two or three-star, and €1 elsewhere.

It sounds like loose change, but it multiplies. A couple spending a week in a five-star pays €42 in tax before IGI; in a three-star, €21; somewhere with no stars, €14. It won’t make or break the trip, but plenty of booking sites only show it at the very end, after you have already picked the room. The full rules are in the Andorra tourist tax guide.

The base that makes skiing cheaper

Ski-in ski-out in Soldeu or Pas de la Casa is lovely, and you pay for it. My pick for value is Encamp. Grandvalira puts it about 10 minutes’ drive from Andorra la Vella, the Funicamp lifts you straight into the ski area, and with a day pass you park free in four council car parks (Coma Llarga, Prat de Baró, Arínsols and Prat de l’Areny) between 8:00 and 23:59. Stay in the parish and the free Funibus drops you at the Funicamp every 20 minutes.

So you ski exactly the same slopes as the Soldeu crowd and come back to a proper town with a supermarket and ordinary restaurants. More on that in hotels in Encamp.

No car, no problem in the capital

Most British visitors arrive by coach from Toulouse or Barcelona airport, and the cheapest move after that is not hiring a car at all. From the bus station in Andorra la Vella, national lines run to Encamp, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa, Arinsal, Ordino and La Massana, and a single costs €1.90 in zone 1, €3.45 in zone 2 and €4.80 in zone 3.

On a summer trip I’d choose a plain hotel near a stop on the Andorra buses network over a nicer one in a village with no service. You save on hire, parking and petrol in one go.

When all you need is a bed

If you’re travelling solo, heading out on the hills at dawn or barely planning to see your room, a hotel can be overkill. Andorra Turisme lists hostels, youth hostels and mountain refuges among its stay types, and those without stars pay the lowest tax, €1. Where the savings leak away

I see two mistakes again and again. One is comparing room rates without adding the tax and IGI, which are charged separately. The other is booking far away to save money and then paying for parking, buses or fuel every single day.
