What to buy in Andorra when you're flying home to Britain

«What should I buy in Andorra?» sounds like a question about shops, but for a British visitor the real answer comes from UK customs and the size of your luggage. You’ll find almost anything on the shelves, yet only part of it makes sense to carry home. Here’s how I’d think about it, without inventing prices no official source publishes.

Start with what you can bring home

gov.uk sets the allowance for other goods coming into Great Britain at £390 per person, dropping to £270 for anyone arriving by private plane or boat. You can’t pool it with anyone else, and going over means paying tax and duty on the whole amount, not just the excess. Driving out through France or Spain, you’ll meet their customs first, which apply the Andorra limits published by the tourist board. Flying home from Barcelona or Toulouse, you then land with the British ones. So the question isn’t what’s cheap, it’s what deserves a slice of that £390.

Is Andorra cheaper?

Honestly, I can’t tell you with numbers. Neither the Andorran government nor the tourist board publishes price comparisons, and the figures floating about online come from individuals. I’d look up the exact price at home, model and size included, and compare in the shop. If the difference isn’t clear, it isn’t worth carrying.

What I’d bring back

First, ski and mountain gear. The tourist board explains that Canillo, La Massana, Ordino and Pas de la Casa hold much of the country’s sports retail because of their closeness to the slopes. Second, something local. The tourist board highlights high-altitude wines from the country’s five wineries, mountain cheeses and cured meats such as donges and bulls, forest-fruit jams and mountain honey.
