The best time to visit San Marino, month by month and by the numbers

San Marino has an advantage few small destinations share. It publishes how many people come in every month. The official statistics count the cars and coaches crossing the border, and with that table and the climate figures you can pick a month on more than a hunch. My short answer is May, June or September. The longer one has nuances, because every trip weighs crowds, heat and opening hours differently. What the visitor numbers say

Between July 2025 and July 2026 the busiest month was August, with 382,005 visitors, and the quietest was February, with 70,788. That’s more than five times the difference, and you feel it in the narrow streets of the Città, where one full coach changes the mood of a whole square. July sits around 290,000, June rises to 213,579 and September falls to 208,929.

The figure that strikes me most is December. At 164,901 visitors it beats October and nearly doubles November. It lines up with the Natale delle Meraviglie, the old town’s Christmas market, which a local site dates from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. I cover it in Christmas in San Marino.

Spring builds gently. March stays at 103,716 visitors, and April and May hover around 150,000. For me that spring plateau is the best balance of crowds and weather all year. The statistics are monthly and don’t show which days are busiest, so to be safe I’d go midweek.

The weather, in brief

San Marino sits on top of a mountain and it shows. August averages 22.5 °C and January 4.2 °C, with snow on the higher ground in most winters. The rainiest month is November (99 mm) and the driest are July and August. May, June and September average between 15 and 21 °C, which to me is the ideal temperature for walking up and down hills. My favourite month, and why it isn’t August

My single pick is the second half of September. You get half August’s visitors, an average of 17.5 °C and a landscape still green for the rampart walk between the towers. May is nearly as good, with the museums open until 17:50.

October deserves a mention too. With 138,918 visitors in 2025 it’s calm, the average is still 13 °C and the days are long enough for the towers and a museum or two before the 16:50 close. The catch in 2026 is the three days without a cable car, from 21 to 23 October, and the Rallylegend weekend in Serravalle, which I’d rather avoid if I were after quiet streets.

I’d only choose August if there were no alternative. It isn’t bad, it’s just when San Marino most resembles a queue. If you’re going in summer, my advice is to be up there before ten and stay overnight, because the evening is a different place. At the height of summer the cable car keeps going until 00:45, so you can sleep in Borgo Maggiore and still have dinner up top.

Dates that change your visit

Three are worth remembering. First, 27 September, when the State Museums switch to winter hours, 09:00 to 16:50, and open free for World Tourism Day. Second, the closure of the Palazzo Pubblico in San Marino, under restoration since 2 April 2026. The official ticket office says until 31 October, so I’d check before going. Third, the cable car closes for testing from 21 to 23 October 2026.

A couple of dates bring atmosphere. Every 1 April and 1 October the two Captains Regent take office with a ceremony in the centre, and 3 September is the national holiday. From 8 to 11 October 2026 Rallylegend is held in Serravalle, and I’d book early if your dates overlap. The Medieval Days take place in July, but the official website still shows the 2025 edition. If high season is your only option

That’s fine. I’d do three things. Arrive on the first bus from Rimini or before nine by car, start with the towers and leave the main square for late afternoon.
