Christmas in San Marino, the Natale delle Meraviglie

Christmas in San Marino has something summer doesn’t, which is that Titano stops being a beach day trip. December brings plenty of visitors, more than October or November, and the main reason has a name, the Natale delle Meraviglie. First, though, a caveat I think it’s only fair to give.

A word of caution on the dates

The 2026-27 dates, 28 November to 6 January, 10:30 to 19:00 and free, come from the calendar on sanmarinosite.com, a private website that says it takes them from San Marino’s tourist office. I haven’t found an official website for the event itself, and I couldn’t cross-check with the tourist office. So if you’re booking a hotel purely for the market, I’d reconfirm in November, once it’s being set up. The rest of the year is in events in San Marino.

What’s at the Natale delle Meraviglie

The programme takes over the old town. Expect a chalet market, a small Christmas village where Father Christmas has his house, a skating rink, buskers, concerts and a New Year’s Eve party out in the squares. None of it costs anything to walk into, because entry is free.

The rink is what appeals to me most. The Cava dei Balestrieri is the crossbowmen’s ground inside the city, the same space linked to the medieval festival in summer, and seeing it turned into an ice rink strikes me as the best image of a Sammarinese Christmas. What’s the weather like?

Mountain cold. In December the average high is around 7.4 °C and the low 3.2 °C, with about 8 rain days in the month, according to the 2006 to 2023 series Wikipedia cites from Arpae. On top of that, above 400 or 500 metres it snows most winters, and the city is higher still. I’d bring shoes with grip, because the streets are stone and steep. Planning a December day

I’d go up early. Darkness comes early in December, and both the cable car and the market wind up at seven in the evening. If you want to see the lights on, the easiest way is to stay the night up top. Coming for a day from Rimini, I’d aim to be on the ridge by late morning, do a museum or a tower before lunch and leave the market for the last hours of daylight, so you get both the view and the lights without missing the last cable car.

My order would be museums in the morning and market in the afternoon. The State Museums open 09:00 to 16:50 on the single €11 pass, but close on 25 December and 1 January. Mind the public holidays. In San Marino they fall on 8, 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 and 6 January. And a note for anyone coming up from Rimini, because the current shuttle bus timetable ends on 7 November and the next winter one isn’t published yet, so check the departures once it is. Christmas at the table

Sources on Sammarinese cooking mention three dishes for the season. For the big day, cappelletti in capon broth; for Christmas Eve, pasta with chickpeas; and for pudding, bustrengo, which depending on who’s describing it is either a honey and nut sweet or a bake of stale bread and maize. If you spot bustrengo in a bakery, I’d try it. It’s the kind of local sweet you won’t find in the Christmas markets back home, and that alone makes it worth a go. More dishes in San Marino food.

If shopping is on your mind, there’s one more useful detail. A private website puts the start of the winter sales in that same Christmas-to-Epiphany stretch, sometimes ahead of Italy’s. I wouldn’t plan a trip around it, but if it coincides, all the better.

One last warning
