San Marino in summer, long days and evenings on the ridge

Summer is when San Marino gives the most and is hardest to enjoy. In July and August 2025, 674,955 visitors came in, nearly a third of the whole year, and the lanes of the City feel it. Yet it’s also the only time the museums stay open until almost eight, the cable car keeps going past midnight and the old town fills with crossbowmen and period costume. How many people come, and when

The official statistics give visitors per month and also how many coaches arrive, and the two numbers tell different stories. August has the most visitors, 382,005 in 2025, and the most cars, 113,220. But July is the coach month, with 1,245 against August’s 941. June stays at 213,579 visitors, and to me it’s the best summer month if you want warmth without the crush.

What the statistics don’t tell you is the time of day people turn up, so here I’m going on judgement. Coach excursions come up from the coast in the daytime. That’s why I’d arrive before ten, do the towers first and leave the square for late afternoon.

Heat at over 700 metres

The Cesta stands at 755 metres, which helps, but it isn’t a miracle cure. July averages a high of 27.4°C in the series quoted by Wikipedia, and steep cobbles make it feel warmer. I won’t repeat the full table, which is in the weather in San Marino. What I will give you is how I’d split the day. The walk between the towers first thing or after six. The middle of the day indoors, in the State Museum or the art gallery. Water and a hat at all times, because the ridge has little shade.

Festivals, crossbows and contests

The big moment of the summer is the medieval festival at the end of July. In 2025 it went by the name Giornate Medioevali and ran from 25 to 27 July, with a procession, the reading of the proclamation and the Disfida del Tricorniolo in the Cava. In 2026, according to the crossbow federation, the old town’s historical re-enactment was called San Marino Antiqua, lasted three days and ended on Sunday 26 July with the contest marking the federation’s 70th birthday. Dates for 2027 aren’t out, so I’d wait for the programme before booking. What I know of the festival is in San Marino’s medieval days.

It isn’t the only contest. On 28 June 2026 there was another in the Cava dei Balestrieri for the 150th anniversary of the SUMS, the mutual aid society. Two more dates are worth putting in the diary. On 7 July the state museums are free for the UNESCO anniversary, and 28 July is a bank holiday marking the fall of Fascism in 1943.

The castelli have their own summer fêtes. The only official calendar online is from 2024, when Acquaviva and Domagnano held theirs in late June, Faetano in early July and Fiorentino in late July. Take it as a pointer, not a date.

Long days to see more

Summer opening is the big advantage. From 28 June to 5 September the towers and state museums open 8:30 to 19:45, and from 16:00 there’s a €5 late ticket. The Wax Museum opens 9:00 to 20:00 in July and August. And through July and into early September, until the 6th, the cable car goes up and down until 00:45, which makes a bed in Borgo Maggiore and dinner up top perfectly doable. The sea, a bus ride away

San Marino has no beach, though you can see the Adriatic from the Guaita. Bonelli’s shuttle gets you down to Rimini station in 55 minutes for €7, and Rimini has 15 km of sand and 250 bathing establishments, according to the town council. In summer 2026 Bonelli also ran a service from the Riviera resorts to San Marino from 8 June to 11 September, at €18 for the travel alone. Whether it returns in 2027 I don’t know. My summer formula is simple. If it’s a beach holiday, I’d stay on the coast and come up early one day. If the trip is about San Marino, I’d stay up top one night and go down to the sea for an afternoon.
