Grand Hotel San Marino, the big hotel at the gates of the old town

If the Titano is the hotel tucked into the medieval lanes, the Grand Hotel is the one looking out over the drop. It stands on Viale Antonio Onofri, on the edge of the old town, with 60 rooms and suites facing the Montefeltro valley and the Apennines. It’s a four-star, the ceiling in a country whose official statistics have no five-star category, and I think it’s the easiest choice in San Marino for anyone arriving by car who wants to sleep up on the mountain.

Where it is and why that matters

Viale Onofri runs along the edge of the Città, at the gates of the old town. That gives the hotel two things the pedestrian-zone hotels can’t offer. First, your car goes into the hotel’s own covered garage, with valet parking and EV chargers. Second, from the rooms with balconies the view doesn’t hit the house opposite, it opens out over the valley.

The trade-off is small. To reach Piazza della Libertà or the towers you walk uphill through the old town for a while, which is true from almost anywhere in San Marino. The group actually suggests parking here to walk to its other hotel, Hotel Titano, so we’re talking about a short stroll.

Four room types, and the one I’d pick

There are four categories, with a double or twin beds, bath or shower, carpet or parquet. The Classic is about 15 m² and its window faces an inner side. The hotel sells it as the quietest room, which I believe, but you lose the very thing that makes this building special. The Superior goes up to about 22 m², with a private balcony over the Montefeltro, room for a third person on an extra bed and a connecting door to the next room. The Deluxe is also 22 m² with a balcony, plus a Dorelan mattress, a capsule coffee machine, Sky TV and a marble bathroom with a walk-in shower.

My pick is the Superior or the Deluxe. The hotel says that in the Superior, in good weather, you can have breakfast on the balcony, and half an hour looking at the Apennines seems to me the best reason to pay the difference. Since two Superiors can connect, they also work well for a family.

Above those sit the suites, about 44 m² with two balconies, and the Executive Suite, with a bedroom, a living room and two bathrooms.

The Executive Suite, the house treat

If San Marino has a splurge, this is it. The Executive Suite comes with a space in the private garage, a welcome drink, a free minibar, a daily newspaper and fresh fruit, an evening turndown and access to the Mességué Centre’s wellness area. In the summer months it adds the sun terrace with the hot tub. Without a published price I can’t judge the value, but it’s the closest thing to a five-star you’ll find in the country. Is there a spa at the Grand Hotel San Marino?

Not in the sense of a spa resort, but there are two things that come close. On the third-floor sun terrace there’s a large hot tub, ideal after a day of hills. And in the same building is the Maurice Mességué Medical Centre for weight loss, which has run weight-loss, health and wellbeing programmes for more than 30 years. The hotel sells multi-day packages with the centre, from two-night detox stays to full programmes.

L’Arengo, the bar and a hall for weddings

L’Arengo is the hotel restaurant and is open to non-residents too, serving lunch 12:00-14:30 and dinner 19:00-21:30. It can take business lunches and celebrations of up to 120 people, and it offers the Mességué diet menu. The American Bar opens from 07:00 to 23:00 for a coffee, an aperitivo or a quick snack.

For big occasions there’s the Salone Camino, holding 200 guests for gala dinners, banquets and weddings, with a fireplace that’s lit in winter. Services, bikes and pets

The list of services is what you’d expect from a full four-star. Buffet breakfast, room service, laundry, porters, left luggage, a shuttle, an information pack on the Republic and Wi-Fi. Small pets are accepted. Who it’s for

Couples who want a balcony and a view, drivers who’d rather not rely on the public car park rate, and groups or wedding parties.
