Teatro Titano, a horseshoe theatre inside the old city

The Teatro Titano is one of the few monuments in San Marino you can’t visit like a museum. There’s no tourist ticket desk and no opening hours. To see inside you have to do what the Sammarinese do, buy a ticket and sit through a show. I think that beats any guided tour.

A small theatre with a box for the Regents

The official theatres website calls it a small Italian-style theatre in the heart of the historic centre. It has 315 seats, 147 in the stalls, 98 in the boxes, 60 in the gallery and a further 12 in boxes, and a stage 11.70 metres wide and 8 deep, with a rounded, raked wooden proscenium. Wikipedia describes two tiers of boxes above the stalls and, at the centre of the first, the Regency Box, where the two Captains Regent sit. The stage is decorated with reliefs telling the Republic’s story, and the dome bears the coats of arms of the castelli.

UNESCO, which dates it to the 18th century, lists it among the monuments of its San Marino site. Wikipedia gives 1750 as the year it was built and says the Sammarinese Fascist Party overhauled it from 1936, under the engineer Gino Zani and largely with money from Mussolini’s Italy, reopening it before the Regents on 3 September 1941. The 2026-27 season

It’s run by the Istituti Culturali and shared between three theatres, the Titano, the Nuovo in Dogana and the Concordia in Borgo Maggiore. The Titano gets eight shows in «Il Cartellone», the drama, dance and music series, and the four «A doppio filo» talks, conversations with people from the entertainment world hosted by Fabrizio Coniglio on Sunday afternoons, followed by an aperitivo. The opening night is Thursday 22 October at 21:00, a concert by Sara Jane Ghiotti, and the programme runs until 4 April 2027. Spoken-word shows are in Italian, so if you don’t speak it I’d pick the concerts or the dance.

Tickets and prices

Season tickets sell from 27 September to 5 October 2026 and single tickets from 6 October, online on the theatres website, at the Teatro Concordia box office on Thursdays 18:00 to 20:00 or at the Titano’s own box office from four hours before evening shows. Stalls and box seats cost €22, reduced to €18 for over-65s and under-30s. Box stools and the gallery are €10, the same as a student ticket. Disabled visitors go free. Planning the evening

Evening shows start at 21:00 and the last bus to Rimini on the autumn timetable leaves well before, so a night at the theatre means staying up on the hill or having a car.
