The +357 code and roaming
Using your phone in Cyprus
Since Brexit, surcharge-free roaming in EU countries such as Cyprus is no longer guaranteed for UK customers, gov.uk says, so check with your network before you travel. By law, mobile data use abroad is capped at £45 per billing month unless you choose to carry on. The country code for Cyprus is +357.

- Free EU roaming isn't guaranteed for UK customers in Cyprus.
- Mobile data abroad is capped at £45 a month unless you opt in.
- SIMs bought in the south generally don't work in the north.
- The country code is +357 and emergencies are on 112.
Before flying, I'd check my network's Cyprus charges or add-ons. It takes two minutes and saves a nasty bill, especially if you plan to use data for maps all day.

What I would book
Your phone is one of the few things in Cyprus worth a quick check before you fly. Since Brexit, roaming depends on your UK network, and the north has its own quirks. Below, the official advice from both governments and my own approach. How the island’s EU status affects you is explained on the is Cyprus in the EU and Schengen page.
Roaming isn’t automatically free
According to gov.uk, UK networks no longer have to let you roam in the EU at no extra cost. So check what your network charges before you go. There’s a safety net, though. By law, your mobile data use abroad is capped at £45 per billing month unless you choose to carry on.
The country code for Cyprus is +357, and emergencies are on 112.
What your network must do
The gov.uk guidance, dated 31 December 2020, sets out what still applies. Besides the £45 monthly data cap, your network has to warn you when you reach 80% and 100% of it, so you shouldn’t get a nasty surprise. Many UK networks still offer free or cheap roaming voluntarily, but gov.uk points out that this could change, so the advice is to check your network’s roaming policy before every trip rather than assume last year’s deal still stands. If you’re on a ferry or a plane, bear in mind that phones can connect to satellite networks at sea and in the air, which are priced separately.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Limassol before prices climb.
The north is different
Crossing north changes things. The Spanish foreign ministry says a SIM bought in the government-controlled area generally won’t work in the north, so ask your UK network what it charges there before you cross. The checkpoint rules are in crossing to northern Cyprus.
Numbers worth saving
Besides 112, the Spanish foreign ministry lists the police numbers for each district, 22 802020 in Nicosia, 24 804040 in Larnaca, 25 805050 in Limassol and 26 806060 in Paphos. The FCDO in London can be reached 24 hours a day on 020 7008 5000, according to gov.uk. I’d save them before leaving home, together with your travel insurer’s number.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Limassol and choose by the reviews.
At the wheel, leave it alone
Gov.uk warns that using a mobile while driving is one of the offences that can bring a heavy fine in Cyprus, alongside skipping the seat belt or drink-driving. If you’re using it for navigation, put it in a holder and set the route before you pull away. The other road rules are in driving in Cyprus.
When things go wrong
Call 112 for ambulance, fire or police, and gov.uk’s advice for a medical emergency is simply to call it and ask for an ambulance. It also suggests letting your travel provider and insurer know straight away if you’re caught up in a serious incident, and signing up for email alerts so you hear when the Cyprus travel advice changes. The page was last updated on 14 August 2026. Make sure your phone is charged before long drives into the Troodos or Akamas, where you may be some way from help.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Limassol on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
One more reason to keep it switched on
Gov.uk recommends registering your mobile to receive wildfire alerts, as the risk is high from April to October. More in is Cyprus safe. Your UK charger fits as it is, since the island uses the same Type G socket, as I explain in plugs in Cyprus.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Limassol before prices climb.
