A Krasochoria village in Limassol district
Lofou, a stone village hidden on its hill
Lofou lies 26 km north-west of Limassol, built like an amphitheatre over the hills at about 800 m. The road ends at the village, which had 79 residents in 2021. It's one of Cyprus's nine Christmas villages for 2026 and among the mountain villages with the most traditional houses registered as tourist accommodation.

- It has ten traditional houses to stay in.
- It's a Christmas village from 21 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027.
Lofou is a place to stay the night. I'd book one of its traditional houses and leave the car parked until the next day, because the village is best on foot and the road stops there.

What I would book
Lofou is the wine village I’d choose to sleep in. It’s tiny, with 79 residents in 2021, yet it has plenty of traditional houses turned into accommodation, and since the road dies there, the silence at night is complete.
Where it is
The Limassol Tourism Board puts Lofou 26 km north-west of the town, built like an amphitheatre over the hills at about 800 m. It’s an isolated village, because the road doesn’t carry on. You reach it from Ypsonas or from the Limassol to Platres road at Alassa, and to the south-west it links to Agios Therapon. A rural road also joins it to Pera Pedi. It’s the closest of the Limassol wine villages to the town.
A name that changed gender
The name comes from «lofos», hill, and the village was called that until the early 20th century, as the school registers show. Because people said «the village of Lofou», with village being feminine in Greek, the name itself became feminine over time. It’s one of those stories the board tells in detail and that I rather like.

A little history
There are no documents dating its founding, but the board notes that Bronze Age vessels turned up at the village’s eastern entrance. The most widely held view is that Lofou began before the Frankish period, when Arab raids pushed people away from the coast, and its hidden position kept it safe. Around 1392, according to the chronicler Leontios Machairas, King James I granted it to his brother Janot de Lusignan, lord of Beirut, and a 15th-century Venetian manuscript lists it among the king’s own estates.
Staying and seeing
The official 2026 hill resorts list includes ten traditional houses in Lofou, as many as Platres. In 2026 the tourist board also placed one of its five grape-themed photo spots in the village, designed by the artist Georgios Mourouzis. OpenStreetMap marks the church of Panagia Chrysolofitissa and several viewpoints, one looking towards Limassol and Akrotiri. The photos on this page show the stone houses climbing the hill, one of them with red tiled roofs up close and the rest of the village rising behind, much as the board describes it.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Lofou and pick one that fits your day.
Christmas in Lofou
Lofou is one of Cyprus’s nine Christmas villages for 2026, along with Lefkara, Kakopetria and Fikardou, with activities from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The official announcement doesn’t say which days each village opens, so it’s worth checking nearer the time.
Pairing it with other places
Koilani is about 3.5 km away as the crow flies, Vouni nearly 4 and Lania, already in Commandaria country, about 4.3. From Lofou you can explore both of the district’s wine routes.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Limassol before you arrive rather than at the desk.
