I'd come to Lady's Mile for a beach without the crowds close to Limassol. With 8 km of sand, a short walk always finds you space. Bring water and shade, as I have no official details of facilities.

  2. 02 My tip

    Shallow water

Clear, shallow water, says the board. It's easy with children, but keep an eye on them, as I have no lifeguard information.

  3. 03 Getting there

With the lake and the monastery

Akrotiri salt lake is about 3 km away and St Nicholas of the Cats another 3. Half a day covers the lot.

What I would book

Lady’s Mile is the beach I’d suggest to anyone in Limassol who wants sand without the town at their back. It isn’t the prettiest in the district, but it is the roomiest, and in high summer that counts for a lot.

Eight kilometres, not one mile

Despite the name, the Limassol tourist board puts it at about 8 km long. It lies on the east coast of the Akrotiri peninsula, a few kilometres from town, and the board describes clear, shallow water, a relaxed atmosphere and a vast, mostly uncrowded shoreline, perfect for long walks, a swim or simply lying in the sun. The photo on this page sums it up, wide sand, dune plants and a calm sea.

I won’t say anything about where the name comes from, because I haven’t found it in an official source I can cite.

Inside the British base

Lady’s Mile lies within the Akrotiri British Sovereign Base Area, according to OpenStreetMap. In practice you arrive and enjoy it like any other beach, but bear in mind there are military areas around that mustn’t be photographed. The Base Areas Administration also notes that the peninsula’s coastline has some of the island’s few nesting beaches for green and loggerhead turtles, so respect any marked-off areas you come across.

What to bring

I haven’t found official details of facilities on the beach, such as lifeguards, sunloungers or bars, and I can’t confirm whether it holds a Blue Flag. So I’d come prepared, with water, some food, a parasol and sun cream. With children, the shallow water helps, but keep watching them all the same.

Lady’s Mile against the other beaches

Each beach in the district has its own crowd, and it’s worth knowing what this one offers before you go. If you want facilities and a promenade, the town beach at Akti Olympion, about 2 km long according to the tourist board, is handier. For rocks and snorkelling, Governor’s Beach to the east is another world. And if you like wind for windsurfing, Kourion beach, below the Episkopi cliffs, is the one the board recommends. Lady’s Mile wins on space and calm, and for a long walk along the shore there’s nothing to match it near town.

To get there, a car is the easy option, as I have no official information on buses to the beach. From central Limassol it’s a few kilometres south, and remember that Cyprus drives on the left.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Lady's Mile on GetYourGuide.

How to combine it

Lady’s Mile lies some 8 km in a straight line from Limassol, about 3 km from Akrotiri salt lake and another 3 from St Nicholas of the Cats, the cats’ monastery. My plan would be the monastery first thing, the lake mid-morning and the beach for lunch and the afternoon. To compare it with the district’s other beaches, from Governor’s Beach to Pissouri, see Limassol beaches.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Limassol: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
