Licensed traditional houses
Agrotourism in Cyprus, staying in a village house
In Cyprus, official agrotourism means the restored traditional houses that the Deputy Ministry of Tourism registers as accommodation. The list of August 2026 records 184 of them, with around 1,650 beds, nearly half in the mountain villages and most of the rest in Larnaca and Paphos villages.

- The official list records 184 traditional houses to stay in.
- 84 are in the mountain villages.
- Larnaca has 47 and Paphos 37 including Polis.
- A car makes reaching them much easier.
For me, a night or two in a village house is the best part of a trip to Cyprus. I'd book in the Troodos in summer, for the cooler air, and in the Larnaca or Paphos villages in spring.

Bring a car
Many are in villages with little public transport, so hiring a car makes sense.

What I would book
Spending the night in an old stone house in the middle of a Cypriot village is one of my favourite ways to get to know the island. And you needn’t rely on adverts, because the Deputy Ministry of Tourism registers these houses on its official lists. I counted the August 2026 ones, and here’s where they are. Every other way to stay is covered in where to stay in Cyprus.
Traditional houses, licensed
The official lists have two categories for this kind of place, traditional houses run as apartments and those run as small hotels. Adding up every area gives 184 houses with about 1,650 beds, in other words small houses with few rooms. They carry no stars or letters, the list shows them as unclassified.
Where they are
Nearly half, 84, are on the mountain villages list. Kalopanagiotis, Kakopetria, Platres, Lofou and Pedoulas have some of the most accommodation, all covered in Troodos hotels. Larnaca district adds 47, with seven in Kalavasos and the rest spread across Lefkara, Maroni, Skarinou and Kato Drys. Paphos has 33 on its list, in villages such as Panagia, Goudi, Kathikas and Kritou Terra, and the Polis area adds four, in Drouseia, Lysos and Polis itself. Limassol, Nicosia and Paralimni round off the list with a handful.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Kalopanagiotis on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Paphos and Limassol, house by house
On the Paphos list, the villages with most houses are Goudi, with six (Charma, Elpida’s Stone Houses, Kostaris, Leonidas Village Houses, Pinou’s House and Spanos House), and Panagia, with five, among them Archontiko tou Meletiou and Palati tou Xylari. Akourdalia has three, the largest being Amarakos with seven apartments; Kathikas has Elinn and Ta Anogia tou Michali, and Kritou Terra has Makrynari and To Konatzi tis Kritou. In Drouseia, Sapfo has seven apartments. Almost all have between one and four units, and only Kaizer Agrotourism, at Amargeti, holds a final licence. In Paphos town itself, two old houses work as hotels, Kentrikon 1924, with 18 rooms on Makarios Avenue, and Vasilias Nikoklis Inn, with eight at Nikokleia.
The Limassol list is shorter. At Parekklisia there are Meleni Cottage Houses, with a final licence, and Rothkia’s Home; at Anogyra, Nicolas & Maria’s Cottage, with eight apartments; and at Episkopi, To Spiti tou Antoni, run as a small ten-room hotel. In central Limassol, Metropole and Sir Paul, on Iphigenias Street, are traditional houses converted into hotels.
What the Larnaca board says
The Larnaca tourism board has a page on agrotourism naming the district villages where it’s on offer, Agios Theodoros, Choirokoitia, Kalavasos, Kato Drys, Lefkara, Maroni, Psematismenos, Skarinou, Tochni, Troulloi and Vavla. For bookings it points to the official Cyprus Agrotourism Company website. Its suggestions include watching village bread or hand-made halloumi being prepared, joining the olive, nut, citrus or grape harvests in season, and seeing each village’s craft, such as Lefkara and Athienou lace or Livadia basketry.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Kalopanagiotis and pick one that fits your day.
How I’d choose
In summer, the mountains, where the cooler air is welcome. In spring and autumn, the Larnaca villages, with Choirokoitia and Lefkara close by, or those on the Paphos plateau. Prefer the coast and a kitchen of your own? See apartments in Cyprus. And always with a car, since many are in villages with very little public transport. What to check before hiring one is in car hire in Cyprus.
What the list leaves out
The register has no prices and doesn’t say whether a house serves breakfast or has a vegetable garden, so beyond what the Larnaca board suggests I’m not describing farm experiences I can’t check. Look at each house’s website before booking. To pick a village, start with the prettiest villages in Cyprus. In the valley of the same name, Pano Panagia also has village houses to stay in. One habit I’d recommend is this. Before booking a village house through a holiday-rental site, look it up by name on the Deputy Ministry’s list for its area. If it isn’t there, it isn’t a licensed tourist establishment, and that’s worth knowing before you pay a deposit. If you’d rather have a small hotel than a whole house, see boutique hotels in Cyprus, and on the coast the equivalent is the register’s tourist villas, covered in villas in Cyprus.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Limassol before you arrive rather than at the desk.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Kalopanagiotis on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
