Troodos trail

The Atalante Trail, the long loop round Olympus from the square

The Atalante Trail is the long loop of Mount Olympus. It leaves Troodos Square and circles Chionistra in 14 km, between 1,700 and 1,750 metres, through black pine and juniper forest. On the way there is a juniper around 800 years old, the mouth of a chrome mine that closed in 1982 and a drinking water fountain.

  • The Atalante Trail is a 14 km loop around Mount Olympus.
  • It starts and finishes at Troodos Square.
  • It passes an 800-year-old juniper and a chrome mine closed in 1982.
  • There's a fountain 3 km from the start.

I'd keep it for people who have already done the Artemis and want a full day in the mountains. It's 14 km, so start early, not least because the second half means crossing the road and finding the wooden signpost.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    An 800-year-old juniper

One of the largest stinking junipers (Juniperus foetidissima) in the area grows beside the path, around 800 years old, according to the Troodos development company.

    The chrome mine

The trail passes the entrance tunnel of the chrome mine, out of use since 1982, a reminder of the mountain's mining past.

    Watch for the signpost

At 9 km you reach the Troodos-Prodromos road. To carry on, cross it, walk about 200 m along the Katoikies Chromiou forest road and take the turn marked by a wooden sign.

What I would book

The Atalante is the Artemis’s bigger sibling. It circles the same mountain, but lower down and over twice the distance, which is why I see it as a full day out rather than a stroll. I describe it using the ANETroodos trail notes, which give plenty of detail on the route.

A 14 km loop

The company’s nature park page gives the Atalante 14 km as a loop starting from Troodos Square. The trail notes add that it circles Chionistra between 1,700 and 1,750 metres, with a high point of 1,830 and a finish at 1,748. It runs almost entirely through dense black pine and stinking juniper, and from several stretches, the notes say, you can see every part of the island.

The juniper and the mine

Two things make it special. The first is a stinking juniper of about 800 years, one of the largest in the area. The second is the entrance tunnel of the chrome mine, closed in 1982, which the company singles out as particularly interesting. That mining past makes more sense at the Troodos Geopark, which explains how these mountains rose from the seabed. Among the endemic plants the notes mention golden oak, a Troodos mint and the Troodos alyssum.

The stretch that can catch you out

The notes are careful about the second half. The first finishing point is nine kilometres along, on the Troodos to Prodromos road. To continue you cross the road and walk about 200 metres along the Katoikies Chromiou forest track, towards the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, until a wooden sign marks the turn. From there the path runs roughly parallel to the road back to the square. If you only want the first part, you could arrange a pick-up at that point.

Water and precautions

There is a drinking water fountain three kilometres from the start, heading towards the square. I wouldn’t rely on it alone and would set off with water for the whole day. The trail lies inside the national forest park, where fires are banned except at designated barbecue sites, and from April to October the fire risk is high.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Atalante Trail and choose by the reviews.

How to fit it in

I’d start and finish at Troodos Square, where the information centre can tell you about trail conditions. According to the company it opens daily from 10:00 to 16:00 and has displays on the area’s history and habitats, with stuffed animals and birds, a useful primer before a long walk. For something shorter, the Artemis Trail circles the summit in half the distance, and the Persephone Trail leaves the same square for the Makria Kontarka viewpoint. The mountain’s protected areas are covered in nature parks in Cyprus.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Limassol on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

True or false?

0/3 Pick before you peek.

  1. The Atalante Trail starts and ends at Troodos Square.

    See the answer

True. It is a loop, and the regional development company puts both its start and finish on the square.

  2. The chrome mine on the trail is still worked.

    See the answer

False. It closed in 1982; today only the tunnel entrance can be seen.

  3. The Atalante is longer than the Artemis.

    See the answer

True. It is 14 km, twice the 7 km of the Artemis.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Atalante Trail?

Fourteen kilometres as a loop, according to the nature park page of the Troodos development company.

Where does the Atalante Trail start?

At Troodos Square, where it also finishes. The national forest park's information centre is there.

How high does it go?

It circles Chionistra between 1,700 and 1,750 metres. The highest point is 1,830 metres and the finish 1,748.

Is there water along the way?

Yes, a drinking water fountain three kilometres from the start, heading towards the square. I'd still carry plenty.

How does it differ from the Artemis Trail?

The Artemis is 7 km and circles the summit higher up, at about 1,850 m. The Atalante is twice as long and runs a little lower.
