The airport in the north

Ercan airport and what you need to know first

Ercan airport is in northern Cyprus, about 13 km in a straight line from Nicosia. Gov.uk warns that if you enter the Republic of Cyprus through the north, for example via Ercan, the authorities will consider you to have entered illegally, with possible fines and refusal of entry or exit. Flying into Larnaca or Paphos avoids all of that.

  • Ercan is in northern Cyprus, about 13 km from Nicosia.
  • Gov.uk says the Republic treats arriving through it as illegal entry.
  • You could be fined or refused entry or exit.
  • Leaving via Ercan after arriving in the south can also cause problems.
  • To see the north, fly to Larnaca or Paphos and cross at a checkpoint.

Even if a flight to Ercan looks cheaper, I wouldn't take it. The saving isn't worth the risk of a fine or trouble leaving the island, and Larnaca is about 40 km from Nicosia in a straight line.

What I would book

Search for flights to Cyprus and Ercan, in the north of the island, may well come up. Before you book, it’s worth knowing what gov.uk says, because entering through Ercan has consequences. Here’s the detail, and what I’d do instead. What the north is and what changes when you cross is in northern Cyprus. The same goes for boats from Turkey to northern ports, as I explain in ferry to Cyprus.

Where it is

Ercan is in northern Cyprus, the part of the island the Republic’s government doesn’t control, about 13 km in a straight line from central Nicosia by OpenStreetMap coordinates. The Spanish foreign ministry also calls it Tymbou. It isn’t one of the Republic’s airports, which are Larnaca and Paphos.

What gov.uk says

Gov.uk is direct about it. Arrive in the Republic through the north, Ercan included, and the authorities will regard it as illegal entry, with the risk of a fine, a refusal to let you in or out, or a ban on returning north.

The Spanish foreign ministry adds a practical tip, to avoid having any stamp or visa put in your passport if you do arrive through Ercan, as it can cause problems at other borders.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Nicosia on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Not the other way round either

There’s a scenario people rarely consider. Landing at Larnaca or Paphos and leaving the island from Ercan is also a bad idea. The Spanish foreign ministry warns that your exit from Cyprus then isn’t recorded in the EU’s shared information systems, which can cause problems with other countries’ authorities. Its advice is simple, always enter and leave through Republic border posts.

If you’re already in the north

Gov.uk adds that time spent in the north counts towards the 90-day visa-free total for the Republic, that FCDO consular support there is limited and that the authorities in the north don’t share information with the British High Commission about British nationals. On the map, Ercan is about 33 km from Larnaca Airport, 27 from Kyrenia and 40 from Famagusta, distances that don’t justify the risk of an entry the Republic treats as illegal.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Nicosia and pick one that fits your day.

What I’d do

Even if you find a cheaper flight to Ercan, I’d fly to Larnaca, which handled 4,950,802 arrivals in 2025 according to CYSTAT, or to Paphos. From the south you can cross north with your passport at any of the nine Green Line crossings, and leave from where you arrived, with no fines or odd stamps. For the crossing itself see crossing to northern Cyprus, and for picking an airport, how to get to Cyprus. If you plan to drive across, remember that only pedestrians can use the Ledra Palace and Ledra Street crossings, according to gov.uk, so choose another crossing point for the car.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Nicosia before you arrive rather than at the desk.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Nicosia on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
