Free things to do in Cyprus

Some of the best things to do in Cyprus cost nothing. The ten painted churches of the Troodos, a World Heritage Site, charge no entrance fee according to UNESCO, the Venetian walls of Nicosia are an open space, and Limassol published a free self-guided walk through its historic centre in 2026.

  • The ten painted churches of the Troodos charge no entry.
  • Nicosia's Venetian walls are an open space.
  • Crossing on foot to north Nicosia just needs your passport.
  • Limassol has a free twenty-stop walking route since 2026.

If I had to pick one free outing, I'd head up to the Troodos to see a couple of painted churches. It's rare to see World Heritage without a ticket, with villagers praying inside.

What I would book

My ranking, scored

My free picks in Cyprus, scored

Only outings that official sources describe as free or as open spaces, scored on what they add to a trip.

  1. Painted churches of the Troodos

Ten World Heritage churches, listed in 1985, which UNESCO says charge no entry and are still used. For me, the best free thing on the island.

    9.5 out of 10

  2. Nicosia's Venetian walls

A star-shaped circuit with eleven bastions that the municipality calls a prototype of Renaissance military architecture.

    8.5 out of 10

  3. Crossing to north Nicosia at Ledra Street

With your passport you walk into the other half of the capital, and the division makes more sense than in any museum.

    8.5 out of 10

  4. Limassol old town walking route

Twenty stops on a free itinerary the tourism board published in 2026, taking in the castle and old town.

    8.0 out of 10

  5. Limassol's Molos

The town's seafront promenade, with a park of more than 20 large sculptures commissioned by the municipality.

    7.5 out of 10

In Cyprus, some of the best things to do cost nothing. Here I’ve gathered those that official sources describe as free or as open spaces, with my score for each. I’m not including beaches or viewpoints without a source to back it up. For more ideas, ticketed or not, see things to do in Cyprus.

The painted churches of the Troodos

My favourite free outing on the whole island. The ten painted churches of the Troodos have been World Heritage since 1985, and UNESCO stresses that they’re still used for worship and open to the public with no entrance fee. Inside, the walls hold centuries of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting. Cover shoulders and knees and go in quietly. They’re ranked in UNESCO World Heritage in Cyprus.

Nicosia’s walls

Nicosia Municipality treats the Venetian walls as an open space, with no opening times or charge. The circuit traces a star, with eleven bastions and three gateways named after Kyrenia, Paphos and Famagusta, and the landscaped moat makes for a long stroll. Carry on to Ledra Street and you can walk into north Nicosia with your passport.

Limassol on foot

Limassol’s tourism board published a free self-guided route through the historic centre in September 2026, with twenty points of interest. I’d finish on the Molos, the seafront, where the municipality commissioned a park of more than 20 large sculptures. It’s exactly the plan I suggest in Cyprus cruises for a port call.

In Larnaca there’s no charge for the Church of Saint Lazarus, the Larnaca Archaeological Museum or the Kamares aqueduct, and on Wednesdays there’s a free guided walk around Larnaca. In Limassol, Limassol old town has a free walking route, and in Paphos, strolling through Kato Paphos and swimming at the Paphos beaches costs nothing.

Museums that don’t charge

In Nicosia, the Leventis Museum in Nicosia, which tells the city’s story, charges no admission and relies on donations, with opening hours of 10:00 to 16:30, Tuesday to Sunday, according to the municipality. The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, now the ethnological museum, is free too, and outside the capital so is the local museum at Idalion, in Dali. In Limassol, the Carob Mill keeps its machinery and doesn’t charge, and nor does the Takis Pattichis pharmacy museum beside the castle, open Tuesday to Sunday according to the tourism board. In Larnaca, by the Finikoudes promenade, the Municipal Gallery and the Larnaca Historical Archives Museum, with a room on Zeno of Citium, are free as well.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Kakopetria on GetYourGuide.

Churches and guided walks for free

At Kiti, near Larnaca, Panagia Angeloktisti, with its 6th-century mosaic, opens daily with no ticket, though it shuts on public holidays. In Larnaca, the council sponsors a free walking tour of the centre every Wednesday at 10:00, lasting two and a half to three hours. In Limassol, the municipality runs its own on Thursdays, and the tourist office in the old town hands out free maps on weekdays. The Nicosia Tourism Board also runs free guided walks, some of which pass Faneromeni church and the Ömeriye mosque inside the walls. Outdoors, the trail of about 4 km around Larnaca salt lake costs nothing, and neither does the sculpture park on the Molos.

Getting around on a shoestring

Transport isn’t free, but there’s a trick. As a visitor you can buy a paper card valid for four journeys for €8.70, and if you use them all in one day, the rest of that day’s journeys cost nothing. I explain it in buses in Cyprus.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Limassol: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

What I’m not covering

I’m not listing free beaches, viewpoints or trails, because I have no official source to cite on access. Nor reference prices for the trip. For the basics, start with the Cyprus travel guide.
