- Anogyra is a village of 326 people west of Limassol.
- It has the 15th-century Holy Cross church, with frescoes.
- In the centre stands the 18th-century Archangel Michael.
- It's about 8 km from Pissouri.
Anogyra is for a short stop on the way to Pissouri or Paphos. I'd head straight for the Holy Cross on the edge of the village, then wander through the centre to the Archangel Michael.

The Holy Cross and its frescoes
A single-aisled church with a barrel vault and dome, from the late 15th century, built over an early Christian basilica and painted in the Palaeologan style.

02 My tip
A sundial on the church
The 18th-century Archangel Michael has a sundial above one doorway and a Gothic-style relief above the other, according to the tourist board.

03 Getting there
On the way to Pissouri
Anogyra is about 8 km from Pissouri as the crow flies. They pair well, a morning inland and an afternoon on the beach.
Pissouri
What I would book
Anogyra is one of those small villages in the Limassol hinterland that people drive through on the way to Paphos without a glance. I’d stop, even for half an hour, for one specific reason, the Holy Cross church and its frescoes, rising among the walls of an old monastery.
Where it is
Anogyra lies in the west of Limassol district, about 28 km from the town, 8 km from Pissouri and 22 km from Paphos airport, all measured in a straight line. In the 2021 census it had 326 residents. It is, in other words, a small village.
The Holy Cross church
The Limassol tourist board places the Holy Cross church south-west of the village. It was built in the late 15th century on the foundations of an early Christian basilica and was part of an old monastic complex. It has a single aisle, a barrel vault and a central dome.
The treasure is inside. The board highlights frescoes in the Palaeologan style which, though worn by time, remain important examples of post-Byzantine religious art in Cyprus. In the main photo you can see the church and its dome among the ruined walls and arches of the monastery.
I have no opening hours from an official source, so you may find it locked. If so, the ensemble is still worth seeing from outside.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Pissouri on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Archangel Michael and the feast days
In the centre of the village is the main church, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The board dates it to the late 18th century and points out two details I find lovely, a sundial above one doorway and a Gothic-style relief above the other. It celebrates its feast twice a year, on 8 November and 6 September.
Carob
Anogyra also has its part in the story of carob. OpenStreetMap marks a carob mill in the village as a museum. No official source I’ve found lists its hours or contents, so I won’t describe it, but if you find it open, it fits the story told by Limassol’s Carob Mill about how important carob was to the island.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Pissouri and pick one that fits your day.
The nearby beaches
Anogyra is in the western part of the district, the land of quiet beaches. The tourist board describes a wide sandy beach near Avdimou with shallow water and tavernas, and Melanda, below red sandstone cliffs, with a little seaweed and not much in the way of facilities, where the Melanda viewpoint opened in 2025, just inside Pissouri. Paramali, another long and secluded beach on this coast, is a sea turtle nesting site. They’re all in Limassol beaches.
How to combine it
My plan would be a morning inland and an afternoon at the beach. Anogyra and the Holy Cross first, then down to Pissouri Bay and its white cliffs. For the rest of the area, see Limassol district, and if frescoed churches are your thing, monasteries in Cyprus has more ideas.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Pissouri before you arrive rather than at the desk.
