Where to stay in Cyprus
Boutique hotels in Cyprus
On an island of big resorts, Cyprus's characterful hotels are the small ones, the family-run ones and the stone ones in the villages. Limassol's Alasia has 60 rooms and the same family since 1963, Columbia in Pissouri has 95, Alion Beach in Ayia Napa 100, and up in the mountains traditional houses have been turned into small hotels.

- The official register has no boutique category.
- Character lies in small, family-run hotels like the Alasia, Columbia and Alion Beach.
- In the Troodos, registered traditional houses offer the most atmosphere.
- Columbia, with 95 rooms, is the smallest five-star on the list.
For me, character in Cyprus comes down to size and ownership. A hotel of under a hundred rooms run by the same family for decades, or a stone house in a mountain village, tells me more than any boutique label.

What I would book
Cyprus is known as a resort island, and with reason, because Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paphos are full of hotels with more than two hundred rooms. That’s why the characterful ones stand out. There’s no official boutique label here, so I use my own yardstick, size, ownership and history, backed by the register and each hotel’s website. For the wider choice, start from where to stay in Cyprus.
Not an official label
The Deputy Ministry of Tourism list distinguishes hotels, apartments, tourist villages and traditional houses, but has no boutique or «hotel with character» category. That’s up to each hotel’s website. The Alasia, for instance, calls itself a boutique hotel, and Columbia makes much of its membership of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Small and historic on the coast
In central Limassol, surrounded by beach hotels, the Alasia hotel is the exception. It has 60 rooms and a firm four-star licence, was designed by architect Sotiris Psaras and has been run since 1963 by the same family, who decorated it around their great passion, horses and polo. There’s a spa and a pool for over-18s only. Small as it is, it offers round-the-clock concierge, in-room dining at any hour, a gym guests can use day or night and free covered parking, which matters in a city centre if you’ve hired a car. Breakfast is served on the poolside terrace from 07:00 to 10:30.
On Pissouri Bay, Columbia is the smallest five-star on the official list, with 95 rooms, and its website presents it together with Columbia Beach as a single resort of 169 suites, some on the hillside with private pools, in 75,000 m² of gardens. More in Columbia Beach Resort. In Ayia Napa, Alion Beach Hotel, with a hundred rooms, is the town’s smallest five-star, founded by the company of Pavlos Pavlakis, one of the area’s tourism pioneers.

Family hotels
Character is also about who’s behind the desk. Asterias Beach, on Makronissos beach, says on its website that three generations of the Hadjisoteriou family have run it. Annabelle, in Kato Paphos, has been in the Michaelides family since 1985. And by Ayia Napa’s harbour, Limanaki Beach is a small three-star of 70 rooms, a few steps from the fishing boats, although its own facilities aren’t documented online that I could find.
Stone and mountains in the villages
If the charm you’re after is a stone village, head for the Troodos. The August 2026 mountain list includes 84 traditional houses, and the villages with the most are Kalopanayiotis, with 23, Kakopetria, with 11, and Platres and Lofou, with 10 each. Some operate as small hotels, such as the New Helvetia. The Paphos tourism board describes those in its area as restored houses with modern kitchens and bathrooms, rustic décor and often a garden with lemon and orange trees and a pool, licensed by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. They’re covered in depth in agrotourism in Cyprus.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Kakopetria on GetYourGuide.
Larnaca and Nicosia too
Not all the charm is in the mountains. The August 2026 Larnaca list includes 47 traditional houses, five registered as hotels and the rest as apartments, spread across the district’s villages. The Nicosia list includes six, a good alternative to the capital’s business hotels. Larnaca’s best-known villages are covered in Lefkara and Tochni.
What I wouldn’t call boutique
A big hotel with a pretty pool and a website full of adjectives isn’t a boutique hotel. Nor, on its own, is a five-star. For me the signs are elsewhere, fewer than a hundred rooms, an owner with a name, a building with a story, or a village where people live all year round. If what you want is a whole house with a pool, look at villas in Cyprus instead.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Limassol: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
How I’d choose
For a city break, the Alasia, for its size and history. For a seaside treat without the resort feel, Columbia in Pissouri. And to switch off, a traditional house in Kalopanayiotis or Kakopetria, with the painted churches a short walk away. For mountain hotels, see Troodos hotels.
