A car on the road climbing Mount Olympus in winter, with a snowy bank and Troodos pine trees behind it

Seven days behind the wheel

My Cyprus road trip, day by day

My Cyprus road trip takes seven days and starts and ends at Larnaca Airport. It follows the south coast via Choirokoitia and Lefkara to Limassol, then Kolossi, Kourion and Aphrodite's Rock to Paphos, climbs to Kykkos and Kakopetria in the Troodos and returns through Nicosia. It takes in all three of the island's World Heritage properties.

  • My Cyprus road trip takes seven days, starting and ending at Larnaca Airport.
  • It follows the south coast to Paphos and climbs into the Troodos.
  • It takes in all three World Heritage properties.
  • No stage is longer than 70 km in a straight line, but the mountains are slow.

I wouldn't squeeze this into fewer than seven days, because the Troodos demand slow roads and plenty of stops. And I'd start and finish at Larnaca, the busier airport, so the car goes back where it came from.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The Troodos day

From Paphos up to Kykkos and on to Kakopetria, with a painted church at the end of the day. It's only about 37 km to Kykkos as the crow flies, but it's the slowest stretch and my favourite.

  2. 02 My tip

    Short distances, slow roads

No stage is longer than 70 km in a straight line, according to OpenStreetMap. What stretches the day is the mountains, not the mileage, so don't cram in too many stops.

  3. 03 Getting there

Return the car where you got it

Starting and finishing at Larnaca Airport saves you dropping the car in another town and leaves the last day free for the east coast.

  4. 04 Watch out

Leave the north for another day

The Republic's insurance doesn't apply in the north and you'd need a separate policy, according to gov.uk. Treat it as a separate trip from Nicosia.

What I would book

7 days

Seven days by car in Cyprus

  1. Day 1

    The airport and Larnaca

Pick up the car at the airport, about 6 km from town in a straight line, and spend the first night in Larnaca while you settle in.

  2. Day 2

    Choirokoitia, Lefkara and Limassol

Choirokoitia, World Heritage since 1998, is about 29 km from Larnaca in a straight line, and Lefkara, the lace village, about 8 km further. On to Limassol for the night.

  3. Day 3

    Kolossi, Kourion and Aphrodite's Rock

Kolossi is about 9 km from Limassol and Kourion about 14 km, as the crow flies. Stop at Aphrodite's Rock and sleep in Paphos, about 23 km beyond it.

  4. Day 4

    Kato Paphos and Polis

Morning at the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, afternoon up to Polis, about 29 km in a straight line, and the Baths of Aphrodite, about 8 km further.

  5. Day 5

    Kykkos and Kakopetria

Climb into the Troodos to Kykkos Monastery, about 37 km from Paphos in a straight line, then on to Kakopetria, about 15 km further, for a night in the mountains.

  6. Day 6

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis and Nicosia

The painted church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is on the edge of Kakopetria. Then down to Nicosia, about 48 km in a straight line, to sleep inside the walls.

  7. Day 7

Cape Greco and back to the airport

A last day on the coast at Cape Greco, about 9 km from Ayia Napa, then back to Larnaca Airport, about 45 km from the cape in a straight line.

Times are a guide, based on the official opening hours checked for this guide.

Cyprus is made for a road trip, and for British drivers it’s one of the easiest in Europe, because traffic keeps left. There’s no railway, buses don’t reach everywhere often, and the best of the island is up in the mountains and in villages you can only reach by road. This is the route I’d drive in a week, with straight-line distances worked out from OpenStreetMap and no journey times I can’t back up. The basics of getting around are in getting around Cyprus.

Days 1 and 2, Larnaca to Limassol

On day one I’d collect the car at Larnaca Airport and stay in Larnaca, about 6 km away, to settle in. On day two I’d head for Choirokoitia, the Neolithic settlement on the World Heritage List since 1998, about 29 km away as the crow flies. Lefkara, the lace village whose lacework UNESCO listed as intangible heritage in 2009, is about 8 km further, and from there I’d drop down to Limassol for the night.

Day 3, west of Limassol

This is the archaeology day. Leaving Limassol, Kolossi Castle is about 9 km away on the map and Kourion around 14. Something few people realise is that OpenStreetMap places Kourion inside the British Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri. Then I’d follow the coast to Aphrodite’s Rock and spend the night in Paphos, about 23 km further on. Why I rate Kourion so highly is in places to visit in Cyprus.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Kakopetria for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Day 4, Paphos and the north of the district

Mornings are for the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, World Heritage since 1980. In the afternoon I’d head north to Polis, about 29 km in a straight line, and the Baths of Aphrodite, about 8 km beyond. If you’ve time for more coast, my most beautiful places in Cyprus has ideas.

Day 5, how do you cross the Troodos?

Slowly. It’s the most beautiful day and the slowest. I’d climb from Paphos to Kykkos Monastery, about 37 km in a straight line, and carry on to Kakopetria, about 15 km further, to sleep in the Solea valley. As the crow flies it looks like nothing, but the mountain road multiplies both distance and time. To choose a village, see the prettiest villages in Cyprus.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Kakopetria on GetYourGuide.

Day 6, painted churches and Nicosia

Next to Kakopetria you’ll find Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, one of the painted churches on the 1985 list. Then I’d drive down to Nicosia, about 48 km in a straight line, and sleep inside the walls for an evening stroll.

Day 7, Cape Greco and home

On the last day I’d head east to Cape Greco, about 70 km from Nicosia as the crow flies and 9 km from Ayia Napa, and then back to Larnaca Airport, about 45 km from the cape. If your flight’s early, swap this day for a quiet morning in Larnaca.

The route works all year, but in July and August I’d drive early, and in winter I’d allow for snow on Olympus. To pick the month, read the best time to visit Cyprus, with temperatures in Cyprus weather.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Limassol: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you set off

You drive on the left within the limits the European Commission lists, and gov.uk isn’t flattering about local driving. The north isn’t on this route, because the Republic’s insurance doesn’t apply there. For the rules, see driving in Cyprus, and for the full table of kilometres, distances in Cyprus. If you’d rather not drive, my one week in Cyprus works with two bases and buses, and with more time, 10 days in Cyprus loops right round the south.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Kakopetria for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

True or false?

0/3 Pick before you peek.

  1. A road trip around Cyprus can take in all three World Heritage properties.

    See the answer

True. Choirokoitia, Paphos and the painted churches of the Troodos all sit on this route.

  2. Your hire car's insurance also covers the north.

    See the answer

False. Gov.uk says you need separate cover, which can be bought at some crossings such as Agios Dometios.

  3. Kourion lies within the British Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri.

    See the answer

True. That's where OpenStreetMap places it, though you visit it like any other site in the south.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need to drive around Cyprus?

For me, a week at least for the Republic, with two days on the south coast, two around Paphos, one in the Troodos and one in Nicosia. With less time I'd pick one half of the island.

What's the best road trip route in Cyprus?

One that mixes coast and mountains. I'd follow the south coast from Larnaca to Paphos, climb into the Troodos and come back through Nicosia, which takes in all three World Heritage properties.

Is it easy to drive around Cyprus?

For British drivers, yes, because traffic keeps left. Limits are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 on other roads outside towns, according to the European Commission. Gov.uk warns that driving standards are poor, so take it steady, especially in the mountains.

Can I include the north on a Cyprus road trip?

You can cross at the crossing points, but the Republic's insurance doesn't apply there and you'd need separate cover, according to gov.uk. I'd do it as a separate trip from Nicosia.

How long does it take to drive across Cyprus?

Paphos to Ayia Napa is about 145 km in a straight line, according to OpenStreetMap. I don't have an official source for journey times, but no stage on this route is longer than 70 km as the crow flies.
