01 My tip
It's a bank holiday
Clean Monday is on Cyprus's official public holiday lists for 2026 and 2027. If you're travelling that day, expect holiday hours across the Republic.

Straight after the carnival
In 2027 Limassol's Grand Carnival Parade is on Sunday 14 March and Clean Monday on the 15th, which makes a perfect long weekend.
Limassol Carnival
What I would book
In Cyprus, the day after the last carnival parade, the whole country heads for the countryside. Green Monday, called Kathara Deftera, Clean Monday, in Greek, opens Orthodox Lent, and what elsewhere might be a day of penance is here a day for picnics. Here’s when it falls, what people do and where the custom comes from. For the rest of the year’s festivals, see Cyprus events.
When is Green Monday?
It moves every year because it depends on Orthodox Easter, which comes seven weeks later. In 2026 it was Monday 23 February and in 2027 it’s Monday 15 March. Both dates come from the official public holiday list Cyprus files with the European Medicines Agency, which confirms it’s a holiday across the Republic. In 2027 it falls the day after the Grand Parade of Limassol Carnival on Sunday 14 March, so the two fit neatly into one long weekend. The full list is in Cyprus public holidays.
A day out with a barbecue
What I like most about Green Monday is that it’s an outdoor, unpretentious festival. In 2026 Limassol Tourism’s listings included two gatherings run by the municipality of Amathounta, east of Limassol. One was at the Dimos Garpozis picnic site by the dam, in Foinikaria, and the other at the Mouttagiaka municipal stadium, with traditional games. Both had music from 12:00, free entry, and tables, chairs and charcoal provided. The nicest touch was the note about the grill, everyone had to bring their own foukou, the Cypriot barbecue.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Limassol before prices climb.
What people ate, by tradition
The Cyprus Food Virtual Museum explains that Clean Monday is the first of the fifty days of Great Lent and that in the villages the fast was kept strictly. Before starting on Lenten cooking, women scrubbed the pots used the day before. At midday people ate greens and olives without oil, out in the fields or in the courtyard. Some villages made pies filled only with greens, and one account recorded by the museum describes heading out in the morning to cut wild Lenten greens, taking olives, halloumi and wine along.
There was a curious exception by the sea. Fish was forbidden but shellfish wasn’t, so in Elia people made flat pies with scallops. And in some villages, the morning still brought masked carnival revellers, who visited the gatherings, drank wine and kept everyone laughing.
Lenten cooking
Clean Monday opens seven weeks of meat-free cooking, and the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum holds several Lenten recipes from Kornos, in Larnaca district. One is «nistisimo», thin layers of potato, onion and tomato with plenty of olive oil, breadcrumbs and dried spearmint, baked for an hour. Another is fasting keftedes, the usual meatballs made instead with grated potato, courgette, carrot and onion, parsley and breadcrumbs, then fried. If you’re travelling during Lent, it’s worth asking for them in tavernas, because they’re seasonal home cooking that says a lot about a place. The village has its own page in Kornos.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Limassol and choose by the reviews.
Travelling on the day
It’s a bank holiday, so I’d expect holiday hours in shops and services, though no official source I’ve read spells out exactly what shuts. If you’re staying in Limassol, it’s the ideal day to head for the picnic areas around the district, covered in Limassol district. And if all that charcoal makes you hungry, the Cypriot grill has its own page in Cypriot souvla, even if the day’s tradition says to skip the meat.
A long weekend in March 2027
The 2027 calendar lines up unusually well. You could fly in on the Friday, spend Saturday night 13 March with the carnival serenaders in Limassol’s Diikitiriou Square, watch the Grand Parade on Sunday 14 March and finish with a Green Monday picnic on the 15th, all without taking more than a day or two off work. I’d book early, since it’s a bank-holiday weekend for locals as well.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Limassol on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
After Green Monday
It starts the countdown to Easter, which in 2027 falls on 2 May. Holy Week and Easter Sunday, with flaounes, red eggs and roast lamb, are covered in Easter in Cyprus.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Limassol before prices climb.
