- Protaras and Paralimni share one official list.
- They have 93 places to stay and about 17,000 beds.
- There are three five-star hotels and 52 apartment complexes.
- Ayia Napa is about 6 km away.
For a family holiday, Protaras strikes me as a better base than Ayia Napa. There are more apartments, it's calmer, and Cape Greco and Ayia Napa are close by whenever you fancy them.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Getting there
One municipality
Protaras is the resort area of Paralimni municipality. The official list doesn't split them, so the figures cover both.

02 To save money
More apartments than hotels
The list has 52 hotel apartment complexes, 21 of them class A, against 38 hotels. For families they usually mean more space.

Three five-star hotels
Constantinos the Great Beach, Grecian Park and Sunrise Beach are the list's three five-star hotels, with the rating marked as indicative.

What I would book
Protaras is the calmer side of Cyprus’s east coast, a stone’s throw from Ayia Napa but with a different pace. To see what’s really there, I went through Paralimni’s entries in the official register, as it stood this summer. Here’s what you’ll find, and the kind of traveller I think it suits best. Still undecided? Read where to stay in Cyprus.
Protaras within Paralimni
Protaras isn’t a separate municipality but the coastal part of Paralimni, and the official list records them together. What to see on the coast is covered in Protaras and Protaras beaches. In August 2026 they had 93 establishments, with around 8,600 rooms and 17,000 beds. What stands out is the weight of hotel apartments, 52 complexes, 21 of them class A, against 38 hotels. For a family, that usually means a kitchen and more space, as I explain in apartments in Cyprus.
The hotels
Of the 38 hotels, three are five-star, Constantinos the Great Beach, Grecian Park and Sunrise Beach, with fifteen four-star and fourteen three-star. The biggest is Sunrise Beach with 894 beds, followed by Grecian Park, Capo Bay, Pernera Beach and Odessa. As elsewhere on the island, many carry a P, so take their stars as a guide only.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Protaras on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Getting your bearings
Visit Famagusta describes a seafront promenade of more than 4 km between Pernera and Fig Tree Bay, the bay behind the area’s best-known name. To the south lies Cape Greco and its cliffs, with Grecian Park looking out towards the cape, near Konnos Bay, where the trail to the Cyclops Cave begins. For me it’s an easy stretch of coast to walk between beaches, with the Profitis Ilias church in Protaras watching from its hill. You’ll find it among the most beautiful places in Cyprus.
Protaras or Ayia Napa
They’re about 6 km apart in a straight line. I’d pick Protaras for a family or restful trip, and Ayia Napa for more nightlife and bigger hotels. Its neighbour’s numbers are in Ayia Napa hotels.
Almost all of them have their own guide. From the Tsokkos group come the Anastasia Beach hotel, a four-star, the Vrissiana hotel, on Protaras Avenue, and the Tsokkos Gardens hotel, a three-star. Up north, opposite Louma beach, stands the Golden Coast hotel, and outside the centre, overlooking Vrisoudia bay, the Crystal Springs hotel, both four-star. Sunrise Pearl is in the centre, the Cavo Maris hotel is a three-star in the south and the Narcissos apartments are on Cape Greco Avenue.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Protaras and pick one that fits your day.
Getting there
Larnaca Airport is about 44 km away as the crow flies. The Kapnos shuttle serves Protaras, and the Cyprus By Bus portal, undated, lists 12 euros per adult. If you’d rather drive, which gives you freedom to explore Cape Greco, see car hire in Cyprus. Several resorts on this coast sell full board with drinks, usually local brands only, and what each covers is set out in all-inclusive hotels in Cyprus.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Protaras before you arrive rather than at the desk.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Protaras on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
